Justbee, what a great idea to put the date of opening on other things besides freezer foods! How handy to get to know the rhythm of how fast or slow we use things up. It would help my planning for when I need to repurchase things, and catch especially good sales at the right time. It takes away "mind clutter". lol

I have already decided to use up food/freezer things that have accumulated, and only buy freshies, milk, etc. that are absolutely necessary.

One of the habits that has really made a difference for me is my Sharpie habit. When I open a product, I write that date somewhere on the item. Facial cleanser, shampoo, laundry detergent, half and half, peanut butter -- whatever. It's interesting to see how long it actually takes to use a product.

Really helpful to write the dates on the Ziploc bags before they disappear into the freezer.

You inspired me to buy a sharpie a while back & now I put the date on my skincare/makeup, too!

Happy New Year, ComPactors!

I'm in again this year.

I'm working at making good decisions when I make purchases. If I don't need something & don't plan to buy I try to skip presentations, email ads, and browsing in stores. I need a few things this month but mostly some good lipstick shades. I may or may not find some.

In January I am going to reorganize my skincare/makeup area. I would love a little vanity table & am going to watch for something that will work. In the meantime I want everything easy to see & use.

Great idea. I have a stash of bath and body stuff. I bought a tall prefab bookcase, put it together, and put it in my closet. Then I took the bath and body stash out of closed totes and placed on the bookcase. Every time I wanted to buy more, I made myself walk into the closet and see how much I already had. It made me back off and not buy. The stash is WAY smaller now. So, then I moved my handbags to the bottom shelves and I force myself to look through my handbags before I am tempted to get another.

Happy New Year ladies!!

I haven't written for a while, but, I am still reading the thread. I haven't done so well the last couple months (credit card shows that), so I am here to recommit to compacting. Please keep writing about your goals and your compacting ideas, they are inspiring.

Have a good day ladies.

ITA Thanks for keeping the Compact going, Just Bee. I am taking the ORC. I will start with the entry way & go thru each room. I want 2015 to be the year of change.

Happy New Year! I have never left, work was bone crushing late 2014 but 2 weeks vacation at the end breathed in new life. Glad to be on this site again because it has truly helped me control the stash. And more importantly, not to create a stash in the 1st place. I still have areas that need work, a lot of work (attic, garage, kitchen. etc). I am up for the challenge again.

Happy New Year to all of you. Count me in; I will probably be a life member. I need to get along better with that voice of reason in my head that speaks up when I pick up something I want to purchase. I want to stop fighting her as she can always remember why I don't need whatever it is. She is a good friend and I will be happier if I stop fighting her.

Just Bee, thank you for keeping this thread going. I haven't posted, but read throughout last year. I didn't do well at all last year, so this year is a fresh start for me. I'm retiring at the end of May, so all my needless spending on clothes, beauty, and jewelry has to stop. Like many of you, I'm trying to figure out what triggers me, why I make these purchases. My first goal is a no buy January, as I need absolutely nothing.

This is what I do with pretty much everything I receive or foods I make. If I don't want to write directly on the container, I just use a piece of masking tape to date it. And I make sure the write the year as well as the month and day, since we've ended up with stuff in the freezer from more than a year ago. As well as knowing how long it takes to use something up, if I do have more than one of something, I can use the oldest first.

This is something my mother always did and I have always followed suit. It's funny how many simple little old-fashioned things I'm now turning back to which make my life easier, simpler, and less stressful. It's definitely given me an even greater appreciation of my mother!
