I've received that reaction many times when bumping into people I haven't seen in awhile. I'll be the one to engage first and when I tell them who I am they're a little surprised at first because they've never seen me thin or with short hair, so it's kind of a double whammy.

Trying some different makeup items.
I think your list was pretty comprehensive.

@feline groovy I have to argue that even some minimal makeup makes a huge difference. I was trained to use a bit of brow pencil, blush and lipstick to completely change the way a woman can feel about herself.
Hair styles, glasses, etc. can be added to the face, but makeup is important

The most recent (and maybe best) thing I've done to alter my appearance was going from a smooth, layered, chin-length bob to a much shorter (but not pixie) more tousled-looking cut.
I'd worn different versions of the bob for the last 30 years, and always had to blow-dry and use a curling brush and/or a flat iron to get it to look the way I wanted...and a lot of hairspray to make it stay that way! My hair is naturally wavy, with a bit of curl here and there. If I didn't heat style it, it would be a mess.
Now, on the days I wash it all I have to do is put some gel in it, let it dry, and fluff with my fingers. I can blow-dry it a little if I want a bit more volume. Second-day hair looks great, too, for the first time ever!
I've gotten so many compliments!

Weird and so unkind. Dud your mom wear makeup 24/7?
@ellaphant No. My father hollored (meaning calling for her in a loud voice) at my mother who was in another part of the house.
Some people are ugly w/o makeup. Just keeping it real, it's not unkind. If the truth hurts, so be it.
My mother never wore makeup 24/7. The little bit she wore-face powder & lipstick, she immediately took off after she came home from work.
It's VERY unkind. And to retell that story as though it was some jaunty little tale is also unkind. Not wearing makeup doesn't give someone moral superiority over someone who does,

wigs, colored contact lenses (different color than your eyes)
gain or loose weight. Makeup changes. Totally different wardrobe/clothing change.

I'm much prefer second day hair on myself. Even third and fourth day hair if I've had a really good haircut. I tell my hairdresser that a sign of a good haircut is when I can get up the next couple of days and just floof my hair with my fingers to get it to look good.

Regarding makeup and a person's face, a very wise person once said "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear," I believe that no amount of makeup will make an "ugly" woman pretty........like putting lipstick on a pig, lol.......and yes, that statement regarding the "ugly old woman who answered the door" was unnecessarily unkind.
On another note.......does anyone get prettier as they age?

Absolutely women can get prettier as they age. A lot of variables come into play though. And then we reach a certain age where looks start to decline but you can always enhance ones looks with good skin care, nice makeup, and a good attitude. An unkempt "ugly" woman isn't going to look as good as a polished "ugly" woman. In my opinion the way a woman presents herself makes her more unattractive than her physical features.
If you're out and about and feel like hammered doo doo, a smile and good posture and friendly attitude can fool those around you. Take it from someone who has spent a lot of her lifetime in chronic pain.

I don't know if this service/product is still available, but a company that I worked for brought in a color consultant for all the employees, male and female alike. The name of the company that provided the service was named "Color Me Beautiful."
The gist of the service is that based on your natural coloring (hair, eyes and skin) everyone can look their best by wearing the colors that are suited to them and those colors fall into warm and cool tones. Everyone falls into a season of the year.
And it works. I, being an autumn cannot wear white, but can wear ivory. Brown is my black and taupe my gray. And it goes on from there. White washes me out and makes me look old and drawn.
Maybe a woman does not need to change her appearance, but enhance it with wearing the colors that compliment her. It really makes a difference. We were able to watch while people were being informed (?) as to their season and the colored fabrics draped on them. What a differance.
