Your father hollered about an ugly woman because she wasn't wearing make up?

Weird and so unkind. Dud your mom wear makeup 24/7?

@ellaphant  No.  My father hollored (meaning calling for her in a loud voice) at my mother who was in another part of the house.

Some people are ugly w/o makeup.  Just keeping it real, it's not unkind.  If the truth hurts, so be it.

My mother never wore makeup 24/7.  The little bit she wore-face powder & lipstick, she immediately took off after she came home from work.

It's VERY unkind.  And to retell that story as though it was some jaunty little tale is also unkind. Not wearing makeup doesn't give someone moral superiority over someone who does,

Re: Altering your appearance

Regarding makeup and a person's face, a very wise person once said "You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear," I believe that no amount of makeup will make an "ugly" woman pretty........like putting lipstick on a pig, lol.......and yes, that statement regarding the "ugly old woman who answered the door" was unnecessarily unkind.

On another note.......does anyone get prettier as they age?

Re: Altering your appearance

I don't know if this service/product is still available, but a company that I worked for  brought in a color consultant for all the employees, male  and female alike. The name of the company that provided the service was named "Color Me Beautiful."

The gist of the service is that based on your natural coloring (hair, eyes and skin) everyone can look their best by wearing the colors that are suited to them and those colors fall into warm and cool tones.  Everyone falls into a season of the year.

And it works.   I, being an autumn cannot wear white, but can wear ivory.  Brown is my black and taupe my gray.  And it goes on from there.  White washes me out and makes me look old and drawn.

Maybe a woman does not need to change her appearance, but enhance it with wearing the colors that compliment her.  It really makes a difference.  We were able to watch while people were being informed (?) as to their season and the colored fabrics draped on them.  What a differance.

Yes @monicakm  I might tend to agree with your observations, but I have often thought that perhaps it may be a matter of math. Perhaps for someone considered "unattractive" the physical changes that occur with aging may result in a more pleasing appearance and the reverse may hold true for the pretty "attractive" one. LOL.....maybe I tend to overthink things.

Trying some different makeup items.

I think your list was pretty comprehensive.

@AngelPuppy1

While a lot can be done with makeup, sometimes it won't matter much.  Example:  If someone I knew was standing 15 feet away from me, I doubt I'd be able to notice she changed her eye shadow color.

She is trying to accomplish the best version of herself.  To feel confident.  In my book, that is to be commended.  It's not important to everyone and that's ok but to those that do find it worth while, that's great.

While I don't disagree with anything you said, the question was directed to the OP.   I wanted to know what she was thinking.

Re: Altering your appearance

I went from medium brown hair color to silver grey and people who haven't seen me transform walk right past not recognizing me. I know it is the hair color change.

This is my list of the quickest and easiest ways to change your appearance without cosmetics:

* cutting your hair length

* styling your hair differently

* coloring your hair

* wearing eyeglasses or changing the color and/or style

* wearing contact lenses instead

* whitening your teeth

* tweezing or growing out your brows

Does annyone have any other ideas?  If so, thanks in advance.

Nope, I'm not going undercover  ;-)

@feline groovy

Not meaning to put too fine a point on it, but what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Or are you thinking in terms of just a 2024 updated look?

No problem, Tink.

I just became tired of seeing my same old self (makes me feel negative).and want to look different.

But there's only so much I can afford to do (low budget), though I'd still like to update my overall look.

You know - "New Year, New You".   ;-)

Thanks again for your input, everyone.   8-)

99% of the time I am home, so I don't wear any makeup.

When I'm out, it's just for a health appointment or errands.

I either go completely barefaced or have some tinted lip balm, blush, and/or brow pencil on.

I agree about eyebrows framing the face.

Mine have thinned, faded, and are missing most of the tails, so I'm hoping my next pair of eyeglasses (worn full-time) will help with that, lol.

Maybe I'll try some cheap semi-permanent brow tint, too.

Since I spend most of my time at home, I was trying to come up with things I could change that would 'perk me up' a bit when I'm near the bathroom mirror.

Thinking maybe that since this is a new year and I want to be better overall, I could simply start with my appearance.  And maybe if I look different, I could start to feel different on the inside.

At any rate, I really appreciate you sharing your great ideas and interesting experiences, and will definitely take them into consideration.
