Not being a smart aleck, but what did you think telling some employee would do? If you're not talking to a manager or decision maker (or the company website) it was probably wasted breath.
Personally, to choose good fruit, I usually ask the Produce Mgr on duty to pick me out a good pineapple ... or whatever the fruit is.

@Luvsmyfam That's happened to me with cantalopes too. I would return it to the store. Usually they want the item before they issue a refund in my experience.
