There's about a 90 minute (total) difference in the amount of daylight between my places in Florida and Michigan. It's really noticeable to me right now as I just came back north for a bit. In Florida, it will be starting to get light and I can be out taking a walk or run by 6:30-6:45 AM with no problem. In Michigan, it's still dark for nearly another hour and that's only if it's a clear morning. If it's cloudy, it seems dark all day.

I like to look at the winter solstice as the first day of the march toward the warmth and light of the future.

I hate to see the slow incline back to longer days. I have no problem with a bit of heat but just not triple degree temps. and sunshine until almost 9:00 pm.  I love the longest night of the year.

Re: Winter solstice

I'm iffy about the shorter days, but otherwise, I'm good with fall and winter and not in any rush to see the return of heat and humidity. Summer lasts long enough around here.

I'm actually hoping the solstice means we actually get winter this year. I don't need to see any blizzards or huge snow events, but a couple of nice, gentle snowfalls would be a welcome change of pace.

Isn't this a Druid holiday?

Same here @stevieb! We've already had one little snowfall this season. I'd love a few more just like it. The type that don’t hang around too long, or cause high risks for those who must travel to work.

@WaJa61 We've had a few flurries and one very meager snowfall that coated the trees and barely the ground. The roads and sidewalks were clear, which is good. I'd like to see a few snowfalls that are measurable, but that don't grind everything to a halt!

Exactly, @stevieb! I was surprised to rise one recent morning to about 5” here in the Blue Ridge (VA) that graciously didn’t stick much to the roads. Mainly coated the ground and trees in a sparkly winter blanket. It was enough to build a decent snowman with my granddaughter. I could live with that most every day of the season. The horses and dogs love it, too! ❤️

@WaJa61 Oh, that sounds so nice and I love that part of the state. I spent a number of years in central Virginia and hope one day to go back.
