Re: When Do You Go From Middle-age to Old-Age & When From There to Elderly?

It is hard to tell someone's physical age because of makeup, hair color, illness, weight gain, genetics etc etc. However, when someone starts talking you can kind of get an idea. I went to a Red hat meeting years ago and listened to all the illnesses and medications everyone was on. Never went back. Another one talked mostly about recipes and their purple wardrobe. I see why Red hats fizzled out. Anyway, a lot of older people just live in the past like my husband. My grandmother who was old said she hated old people. It was kind of funny because she always said the good old days were not that good and lived in the present. She enjoyed being around younger people. She never gave out a old person vibe.

I hope I age like my mom and her sister.  They got older but they never got old.  They passed in their mid 80s but neither of them sat around watching movies thst were 60 years old or ancient TV reruns.  They had health issues, of course, they didn't focus on them.  My mom moved into senior housing when she was 80 and would often talk about the "the poor old ladies" or jokingly refer to them as QTips.  Once she stopped herself mid sentence  and burst out laughing.  It occurred to her that most of those Qtips were younger than her...lol.  She just never thought of herself as old so she never got old.  We talked about going shopping for new jeans for her a few days before she died.  "Those good old days weren't all that good"  was something she often said.

Re: When Do You Go From Middle-age to Old-Age & When From There to Elderly?

I'm almost 69 and don't feel "old" or "elderly."  In my head, I'm 30. But I can tell my body is beginning to change....a few more creaks and arthritis. But it doesn't keep me down.

I still mow, plow snow, exercise, and do some heavy duty work at home. I don't plan on aging into my recliner until I absolutely have to.

I see others my age who look and function like the very elderly. It may be genetics or medical issues.

Maybe I'm in denial or maybe I'm young at heart.

Aging is an individual thing and better than the alternative.

Age is just a number relatively speaking, but don't kid yourself and think you're 30 or even 50 when you're 70-80-90. Nothing looks worse than an elderly person trying to look/dress or act like a much younger person. It actually makes that person look even older (in my opinion)!! If you're "old", embrace it and be thankful for all the life experiences you have. You are wise, and can pass your knowledge onto the next generations!

FYI I'm in my 40s and would NEVER dress or act like a 20 year old! I'm happy and proud of where I am in life!

Re: When Do You Go From Middle-age to Old-Age & When From There to Elderly?

My Mom was 99yrs old when she passed. She danced, played bingo, cards, had her hair done, manicures, and had retired doctor friend. She lived in a retirement home. Some of the ladies were jealous because she and the doctor always sat together for meals. When he passed his granddaughter came in and thanked her for the time they spent together. Just one of the many stories I could write about her.
