@cotton4me, I totally agree with you.  I wondered how I would fill my days since I do not do crafts, do limited gardening, and never belonged to any clubs or groups because I never had time while I was working.  I work a bit part time now, but often feel lazy and unproductive.  It has been a year for me, and I am still looking for ways to fill my days that make ME happy.

@Graciea that seems to be a common question.I think that those who haven't experienced having extra time to do whatever they want are wondering if they will find enough to fill their days..Maybe they want to hear what you do so they can help themselves decide if they are ready to retire. For instance if you tell them nothing much and I am bored to tears they might use that in their cons section of the decision.

It's the same thing when they think stay at home moms sit around watching soap operas all day eating bone bons. It could be that your working friends are just curious. Maybe they haven't retired because they don't know what they would do. And having a conversation of how you fill your days may help them make that decision.

The fact is that I worked really hard for nearly 50 years.  I gave more than any sane person should have, so now I have no reason to explain myself.  So I just smile and truthfully say I am so grateful to be off that treadmill ... Spreading some kindness to others but also myself.  It feels good.

I get so sick of that question, " what do you do all day". I take care of my home and yard to the extent that I can, but if I just sat on my behind and ate Cheetos all day, I've earned the right.

My friends are all retired. We go to the same dance class at the YMCA. We meet for lunch every few weeks. I do have a friend who still works. We meet for dinner on her way out of the office.

I'm a senior and was a SAM years ago.  Now I get asked "what do you do all day?"; " do you cook?", etc. because  I am a widow.  I have plenty to do at home and yes, I do cook.  Not going to drive across town to a restaurant to eat alone.    I enjoy planning what I'm going to cook and I also have health issues so that eating at home works out better.  I do enjoy restaurants with my kids and with a few lady friends I have.

@hoosieroriginal  As a woman who is still working at 68 (I could retire any time), let me just say that we really may want to know what you do because we like our jobs, but we also know our day of retirement will have to come eventually. We REALLY do want to know what you're doing because we haven't yet figured out what we would do if we weren't going to work every day.  At least for me, it's not jealousy, it's curiousity.  We want you to give us a reason why we would want to be like you so we can feel confident about retiring!

P.S.  The only time I'm truly jealous of all you retirees is when that darned clock goes off at 5:00 a.m........I'll never get used to that!

@Rockycoast That was the best answer I came up with too.  I stopped explaining what I do andnow I just say, whatever I want to.  That seems to stop further questions!

Most of my friends are retired so answering the O/P's question is a moot point. I do have a few friends who are still working. When we meet, I work around their schedule. It's no big deal.
