Re: Rant - technology is not going to go away.

@house_cat

Your story made me smile and it reminded me of when my late mother learned to text, we were away on vacation and came back to the car and there was a text from my Mom, I thought it was very sweet

My husband's friend was just here for the last two hours.  He's much younger than we are - 45 years old.  He's a smart man, yet completely computer illiterate.  I've set up email for him twice already and helped him out of numerous iPhone quagmires. Today I had to help him fill out an online application for employment disability - he's having hernia surgery.

He says he wants nothing to do with it all, but he has three grown daughters who communicate with him through text and photos, so he does need to have a phone.  I don't understand why some otherwise intelligent people think they can ignore technology.  Do they think it's going to go away?

My mom retired at 60 years old and one of the reasons was that they changed the entire office system and brought in computers.  She had no interest in learning it and I think for that reason, her employer was happy to see her go.

She never learned to log into a computer or use email.  She lived 31 years after retirement, in which time technology changed a lot.  I think she missed out by not embracing it. My dad on the other hand loved to learn new things. I think it is partly why his cognitive functioning never declined until his dying day.

I spoke to my 89 year old aunt last weekend. When I called, I asked her if I was interrupting anything.  She said, "No, sweetie, I was just watching Perry Como on YouTube".  💕

Re: Rant - technology is not going to go away.

@Annabellethecat66 ...I read your post and I totally understand what you said and everything you said makes sense. For me personally, (late 60's), I have tried learning some electronic items, but after trying repeatedly to figure out how to use them, I get frustrated and just give up. I rarely use a phone anymore and am going to eventually give up my land line. I do have a flip type Tracfone, but rarely use it. Basically, I just don't have the patience or the need for all the electronics we have these days.

I promise to remind myself every day that I am strong, courageous, and resilient.

I love learning new things and I hope that never changes to the day I die.

@Desertdi ...I recently read an article expressing your exact thought.  A large percentage of people did not like all the features on the new cars...I for one do not like the keyless start.  My friend has a Genesis...it's for ever correcting her driving, dinging at her, etc....and it drives her nuts.

Re: Rant - technology is not going to go away.

I only learn what is need to learn  technology wise to do the things I want to do.

I just do not need a lot of the latest technology in my life to make it better. I enjoy my iPad....I enjoy my computer...do not need a smart phone...I have a flip phone I never use.... and I drive a 20 year old car.  I like a more simple life.

My MIL passed away last year at 90 years old.  She always had the latest and greatest computer and cell phone. She paid her bills and did her banking online until she was 88, then asked my husband to do it because she was afraid that she would make a mistake.  When we would marvel at her being so tech savvy, she would say, "I don't want the world to pass me by." She learned by asking a friend of a neighbor for help if she couldn't figure things out on her own.

@Desertdi funny!...my friend left her car running while she shopped and my niece left her mother in law's house (with her car) and got to her destination and could not shut the car off...mother in law had the keys!...I hope when I am ready to buy a new car that keyless is not my only choice.

Re: Rant - technology is not going to go away.

Reminds me of my former hair stylist. He's in his late 50s early 60s.  He friended on FB several times as he kept forgetting his password.  The last time it turned out he was hacked so it was a bogus friend request.  Last weekend, my BF told me he got a friend request from him.........assuming it's a scam since he doesn't know my BF.

So I went to FB and counted 8 different profiles for the stylist.  Oh dear - too funny.
