I don't know of anyone who eats them raw. I eat them steamed.

@JerseyGirl44 I'm just seeing this thread now. Oh, my! You had me at mussels! In the past, whenever we went to Ralph's in Philly, I ordered Mussels Red (fra diavolo) and Mussels White. I ate one bowl as an appetizer and one as my meal. These days, I can only do one bowl, and I usually get the red. That, along with the Sarcone's bread, is a feast! 

 

I make mussels red for 7 fishes whenever we go to my friend's house for 7 fishes. I just clean them and cook them in the shells in Rao's with some additions to make it seem homemade.

 

Years ago, I discovered my grandson loved mussels when I ordered them and he ate most of them off of my plate! Most of his family are not fans, so I try to make them for him whenever I can.

 

BTW, you are right. $55.00 is way too much, especially when they are $5.00 per bag in the supermarket.
