I read the obits online. Our local "paper" comes out once a week (not a typo). By the time you find out the person died the funeral is over sometimes. It's the only way I found out last year 2 neighbors had died as well as the young son of a former co-worker.
It doesn't make me feel old, I can readily admit I am old. The average life expectancy is 78 years. Yes, some will see 90's or even 100, but overall I have more days behind me than in front of me. 60 is only middle age (as some claim) if your going to live to 120.

Only look at obituaries if I'm looking up a certain person.

I have never read the obits. Even if I am looking for info for a funeral service, where to send flowers, etc. - I always get that info from the funeral home website. They post the info first in my experience.

I don't understand why you need to stop reading the obits ... I've been reading them for years ... not because I'm looking for any particular person, but because I find the lives of some of those who have died so very interesting.
I'm interested in genealogy and find some obituaries are like biographies that honor the deceased.

There is enough sadness in this world without needing to read the obituaries. I have never read them and I am not going to start now...

DH and I read the obituaries from the small town paper of where we used to live. We were there 30 years and, although many of our friends also moved after retirement, usually their obits are still posted in that little paper.

@Mustang Shar Very true, I do indexing on Family Search. And the things I have seen while indexing are truly awesome. ![]()

@Mary Bailey I do the same. I think wow... I'm almost 60, it flew by. will be extrordinarily lucky to have a healthy 20 left. Time to party!
Buried a very dear childhood friend this week at 58 yo. Glioblastoma. Wake and funeral were huge. She was literally a perfect person. The wait time at the wake was almost 2 hrs. The church (my church) wasn't as packed on Christmas as it was for her service.
Enjoy every minute.

An important thing about obits: if the paper gives into about burial, he sure to designate someone to watch family home (while family is at ceremony).and
