Our last move the movers seemed like scammers. They clogged up my toilet terribly, very gross, broke things they called "shoes" chipped furniture and then wanted to follow me to the atm to get the tip money!!!!!! He bugged me about a tip a lot during the day. Seriously.  So nope, not tipping. Oh,  plus I hid cologne and it was STILL stolen along w some other things.  a friend recommended the company and had great luck w them. We certainly did not!!!!

WOW! Sounds like a LifeTime movie! I hope you gave them bad reviews.......

I agree with offering water or some sort of drink, but feeding them breakfast? Lunch? I would think it is up to them to have their breakfast before going to work, and bring their lunch (I would offer to them to eat indoors and not in the truck).

To feed them AND tip them? Plus pay the big moving bill. That seems like overkill.

I had a company come take a truckload of stuff from my basement. My kids seemed to think I was a free storage facility. No, come get it or it is going. Cost me $700.00 and the company that took it all resells it to 2nd hand stores, so double profit.

I got tripped up at the "tip" part because of the two men, one was the owner. I wanted to tip the second guy, but their is no graceful way to say "hey owner, you are going to make more money when you drive out of my yard, that is your tip" Ha!

You WOULD think that but when when lunch roles around and they're just standing there looking at you... yeah.

Like I said, between the cost of the move, the cost of the drinks, the cost of the food... nope, no tip.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

Actually, our guys were there around 7AM and had our whole house of furniture and boxes all loaded before 11AM - I had purchased a sandwich ring thinking they could eat but they had to leave so I went next door and borrowed some foil and let them wrap up sandwiches to go.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

Depends on the cost, probably $50 each, plus at a minimum plenty of cold bottled water and subs. We also tipped the movers for the military moves.  The movers aren't making the $$$ and it is back breaking work, and I appreciated their efforts.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

We have never moved without things being stolen.  A box of silver items from my mom's 25th and our own never made it to our house. It was a 40 minute drive. I didn't discover it until 2 years later because I thought I knew the box was in our garage. Our friends just moved a few states east of us. Their box of personal papers, all of it, never made it. They discovered it right away and have taken action, still, all of that information is now "out there".  They had to ship them because they flew to their new location. We are going to be moving again since we are both having problems with the stairs. What do I do to keep them from taking advantage of us?  I have already decided to number the boxes and not sign off until there are all accounted for. Your ideas are much appreciated since I have been worrying about this.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

I have moved each of the last 3 years. I have ALWAYS tipped my movers. I give $10/hour for each mover.

The last move I had I had 2 men for 4 hours so each got a $40 tip.  I have liked the same company from the 1st move so I have used them each time and they have appreciated the tip so much that each time they have been EXTREMELY careful with my belongings and nothing has ever broken/chipped/scratched etc.

I think its very important to tip.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

I really do not understand how boxes can be stolen when they are numbered at one end and then you have to sign off on them at the other end. YOU , the owner, are the one numbering them and then counting them off as they are delivered so it would be YOU who made the mistake, not the movers. I doubt anything was stolen - I think it was accidently left behind and that was on you to check and be sure everything was taken before you leave the house. You have to vacuum the whole house anyway. I think people make false claims against movers all the time.

Re: How much $ to tip movers?

When I last hired movers, it was for a local move from a small house to a smaller apartment.  Still they had to hoist a bit from the basement, lots from the second floor, and they even made a stop between my homes to put 20 boxes of "stuff" into a storage unit for me.

They were efficient, polite, and even interesting. I tipped them something over 10% of the cost in total (none were an owner, just workers) which was more than enough for a good lunch with some left over for a beer at the end of the day if that was their choice.

No way could I have done that job without them. They seemed pleased with the tip and I thought they deserved it.  No one has to tip, but OP seems to be hiring those movers to do something she/they couldn't do themselves.  I'd tip - the amount depending upon service, attiutude, and even my financial status at the time.  Some things only you yourself can decide.
