When I moved here about 8 years ago, it waas two men, they came on a Sunday (which was out of the ordinary) They did a great job, it was very hard labor and I tipped them each $100..

I don't tip movers. Here's why:
I've moved many times over the years. In the past 6 years, I've moved 4 times. My parents moved a LOT and never tipped so it was something I assumed one didn't do. However, one DOES:
*Provide breakfast for the movers: pancakes or waffles, coffee, juice and donuts.
*Provide water and Gatorade (cold, in a cooler) for the entire move (a cooler at the beginning and a cooler at the end) as well as hot drinks if during the winter.
*Provide lunch
*Provide dinner (if still moving/unpacking).
THESE things are EXPECTED in my area, I have found after discussing this topic with family, friends and neighbors; else, prepare for problems with your boxes/furniture. I am NOT tipping after that as well as spending $1500 to move TWELVE MILES (the average cost in my area by well-known moving companies). BTW, they don't pack your items for this cost. Nooooo, that's simply to pick up boxes/furniture, place in truck, drive and then place items in house.
NOT tipping.

Yes, do tip. These folks work extremely hard in inclimate weather and extreme temperatures, I doubt they make much money for the hard work they do. I always have water available, and I tip each worker about $20 at the end if they do a good job. There have been times for long moves that span morning and lunchtime, or a move with multiple stops (like to storage or donation center) that I have also purchased pizza or sandwiches for lunch.

I tip at least 20%. I just moved my office to a new location and I gave each of the 3 movers, $60. I have a special respect for those who put their bodies on the line, for me. Not only is is exhausting work, but if the movers are good, they take care that my property gets there in the same condition it was before I left. Gosh, I am so appreciative there are people who do this for me.

@Kalli wrote:I don't know how much to tip movers, having never used that kind of service. However, I know that my brother has used professional movers 3 times so far as he's been relocated by his employer (from CO to PA and then to Illinois). He told me every time they've moved, stuff has been stolen. I would say please be careful.
The moving company folks know you have to sign off when they are done and leaving. And there's no way you know if everything you've packed is still there. You never know until you've unpacked all the boxes which can take days. Stolen by movers was a box of 45s that my sil's mother had owned. (Her mom died when she was 4 so these things were very sentimental to her. And they were worth $, too, although I'm sure sil wouldn't have parted with them.)
Just a warning for you....
My daughter has relocated twice for her job and each time the movers put a bar coded sticker on each and every single item, had a hand written list of the bar codes and what they were attached to and a final count of the number of items that were moved.
As the items were brought in they were checked off the list.

For a small short move like this I'd tip $20-$40 each if nothing was missing or broken and they did a good job. I just chalk up tips as part of the cost of the service being provided.

After we finished our addition in 2001 and moved to the main floor from the loft. We had movers move our stuff. We had coffee, pastries and soda for them. We also tipped but I can't remember how much but I think it was over $20.00 each. One of the things I did was put colored paper on the things to be moved and that made it a little easier for them. The staircase is a- what do you call it-a swirling staircase so getting the king size mattress down those stairs was a real challenge. We fely by hiring someone and being here we had more control over the situation.

@Goldengate8361 ...We have moved around the country a lot. We used many of the big movers...and had varying degrees of success. Once we used Two Men and a Truck when we were just moving 60 miles. They did a great job. Of course, it just depends on the two men, but I doubt they would be working if they messed up a lot.
We usually gave the driver $100. When we had Two Men and a Truck, we were kind of worried about the result. DH told then in advance that if they did a great job, he would give them $100 each. They worked their tails off and did not damage anything. We also provided beverages and lunch.

Should I tip them? How much? I thnk the move will end up costing me about $300 or so (without the tip). What do you think?
@Goldengate8361@ .. I have to agree with @tbearskii. My DH used to work for a moving company. That $300 you are paying is mostly going to the owner of thee company. The drivers/helpers just get their regular hourly wage. For the amount of things you are having moved I would suggest $10.00 - $20.00 for each person.
