Housecat, I'm so sorry that people have misread your posts and are wrongfully assuming that you're trying to convert your dad.

Thank you, Jaxs mom. I don't mind posters jumping in at the end of a thread and repeating something already said, that's understandable. I don't mind posters who disagree with me, either, but I do wish people would take the time to understand the OP before posting a comment.

I would like to recommend doing some research on creation. The existence of a creator is backed up by a lot of current science. Check into Intelligent design theories.

This is an interesting reply.  I won't say too much because I know some things are off limits.  The more I have studied the more excited I get.  So much science now and archeological discoveries to support many things mentioned in the Bible.  Stories that many still call myths.  I will stop here.  Don't want to be the cause of a "poof".

Church memership is decling for several reasons i think, but mostly because of sin, we live in a world that people want to do whatever they feel they want to do,live the way they want to,they do not read GODS word,or want to live by what he says.

Perhaps you should point out the benefits of non-believing, no purgatory, no fire and brimstone. That has to be comforting to those who feel unqualified for Heaven.

PBS recently did a three part report on that very subject.  Fascinating!  There's a big debate as to whether King David's "empire" was as large as described.  There are several digs going now looking for evidence.

I don't know about science supporting, though.  Science especially does not support Creationism, in fact, it's just the opposite of support.

@house_cat

My response, if your father brings up the subject, would be "look at me! I'm standing here! Isn't the fact that you made me an indication of a miracle?"

He may not feel less anxious after this is said.

I agree with other posters who have told you not to worry, but you may feel the need to reassure him.  The Creator does work in mysterious ways, it must be true.

My dad would not speak of his beliefs.(He seemed angry about the whole topic.) My mom did make the comment that he was stubborn and would not hear of changing his mind.

Mine was not a religious family. Mom was spiritual -- she believed in God's plan.

Upon on his death bed, my dad pointed upwards, as if to Heaven, and nodded AT ME (I was the only one in the room).

I was rather taken aback-- it was as if he wanted me to know that God was taking him to Heaven.

Since he had been nearly comatose, and unable to respond, I must admit that some type of divine intervention must have occurred.

He was an engineer for General Motors. Discussions about "the universe" were always more scientific. Mom did not push him to believe in anything. So, he reached the conclusion that he wanted to believe, either on his own or with "help."

But the only way that would actually be true, as you said,  non believing means no purgatory ect ect, would be if the reality of the afterlife is manifested as a result of ones beliefs while incarnate in the body. There are some philosophies that espouse that, but most people who say it really just mean, I reject heaven and hell as true.

There are really only two options, either belief creates reality both in life and in the after life or there is a universal truth that applies to everyone. Either we create our reality, or reality is outside ourselves in which case universal truth reigns.
