@KingstonsMom. I do run the ads in the paper, but as my dh was a cop for 30 years, I know many people in the department may have access to items placed for safe keeping, all of who may not be honest! If the item were of great. Alum, I would notify the PD I found "an" item, but I would not divulge any more info! After a decent amount of time and trying ( determined by value of item...most valuable gets most try time, etc) only then would I consider the item unreturnable.

I would donate it to a good cause, BUT if YOU really NEED it, then maybe it was meant for you. Only you can say. Years ago, we were walking down the street in Sausalito and found a $20 bill. Up ahead of us, a disheveled man was digging in a trash can. I walked up to him, smiled, and said, "Sir, I think you dropped this back there." He shook his head, and I told him truthfully, "I just picked it up. It's not mine, and we're the only people around. Maybe it fell out of your pocket." He reached out and thanked me. Maybe I was meant to find it for him. Who knows?

I found a substantial amount of money once, right after I’d given a substantial amount to a family member. Unbeknownst to me this family member had been praying for help because all other doors were closed. In my case, I felt like it was a gift from the Universe, a “thank you” for what I’d done. I felt like I was being paid back and put it in my savings account. Each situation is different but there’s nothing wrong with keeping it, a special gift meant for you.
Just my opinion, but your finding a "substantial amount of money after giving a substantial amount to a family member", was Not a "gift from the Universe, a 'thank you' for what you'd done".
You basically profited from someone else's loss, IMHO.
BTW, lost and found ads are free in all newspapers.
I turned it into the police department. They run ads for lost money/items. No one claimed it after 30 days so it was given back to me.

's to you! That has been my experience too.
On one occasion though, my office staff was out on the streets collecting at red lights for the March of Dimes and at the end of the day, while counting the donations, I found a plain yellow gold wedding band (a small size) in my bucket with all the change.
In that case, I figured that the Police Dept. wouldn't try too hard to find an owner since it wasn't very valuable, and it's loss probably wouldn't be reported to them for the same reason, so we placed a lost & found ad.
It turned out than an elderly man who threw all of the change he had in his pocket into my bucket, had just left his wife's funeral and forgot that he had his wife's wedding ring in his pocket too.
I can't tell you how many tears were shed by the gentlemen and my staff and I when he came to retrieve her ring!
I was so glad we placed that ad......it was the best feeling in the world to see his joy of finding it!![]()

I personally would donate the money; my first choice would be our local animal shelter. I would not feel right keeping the money for myself.

@Kachina624 Have you priced ads lately? It would take the whole $25 in our little podunk newspaper.
I would donate.

@KingstonsMom Oh, IG, that sounds like a Hallmark movie. Thank you for sharing this with us. I did not know about free lost and found ads. A feel good post

They have a Thanksgiving campaign going now, a small donation provides meals. Then at your own Thanksgiving you can think of that and know that someone else has that meal because of you.
I believe in karma-don't believe in doing good things in order to achieve good karma. Don't believe that's how it works. But I believe we are given small choices that are small ripples in a bigger ocean. So to speak. You don't do it hoping it will come back to you, but for me I have to believe the universe works that way. Have to try to hold onto that these days.

On a trip to our local Lowe's, my daughter found $300 by a car. We checked in at the store to see if anyone reported it lost and no one claimed it after a week. We donated it to our local food bank. That was a most rewarding feeling. Gotta admit, daughter didn't see it that way....typical teenager response tho'. After a few weeks, she did see the wonderful things it did and was really happy with the familial decision to donate!

If no one was close by, there would be no way to find the owner. You found it, it is your lucky day, spend it any way you wish!!!
