A puddle of water suddenly showed up in our kitchen this morning.  I had been in there earlier doing stuff around the sink and didn't notice any water on the floor then, but a couple of hours later my husband notices a puddle on the floor.  We traced it back into the cabinet under the sink.  I was afraid it was going to be my beloved instant hot water heater for the sink since that had happened before and this one has outlived the last one, but it turned out to be the garbage disposal.  I had to clean all the stuff out from under the sink and put towels down, and my husbands plans for the day changed.  But, it also rained, so he didn't get to mow the grass either.

We have very hard water and it plays havoc with everything like the water heaters and stuff like that, so it may also be responsible for this too.  I acutally use a Zero Water pitcher to filter the water for the cat's water fountain and bowl because the buildup gets so bad even on ceramic.  Forget about plastic.  I guess I need to see if Costco still has those little instant water heaters just in case.  I really like having that at the sink.

Same thing happend to us, had the under the sink cab repaired, but it ruined a portion of the hardwood floor, cost a fortune to repair that. I dont use my dishwasher for fear it will flood and ruin the floor. I dont mind doing dishes by hand, just the 2 of us.

I noticed on a commercial for WeatherTech they now have under the

sink mats for that very reason to catch water.

There must be a lot of people who experience the same from various fixtures to offer a product like this.

@Mistreatedbycs I'll mention the mats to him, but the process of cleaning out wuld still be the same.  The mats would protect the underlying cabinet floor, but we do have some sort of shelf liner in there that was already there when we bought the house and it seems to keep the water from seeping through to the wood underneath.

@Mistreatedbycs - oooohhhh.  Thanks for posting that.  I lover Weather Tech products.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

I went through that a few years ago.  Turned out to be the hose from the faucet sprayer that had a pinhole leak.  It ruined the bottom of the cabinet.  Luckily I found a local handyman that installed a whole new faucet and he rebuilt the bottom of the cabinet.  😕

In my case, it's ALWAYS the garbage disposal that springs a leak.

Re: Discovered a Leak

@Icegoddess

I have no idea what an "instant water heater" might be. Gonna assume it is somehow connected to your sinks water line(hot or cold). Guess I don't personally understand the necessity of one, but that's just me.

We have very low water pressure because we are at the very end of our county's underground water system, and since our home is on a cul-de-sac, our line is as far as it goes.

Our bathrooms are not bad because they are close to the water heater. Our kitchen however is the furthest. Before I put in our new faucet in our kitchen, it took several minutes to get water, I consider hot, no matter how high I set the temp on our water heater.

Been the water leak/sewer backup route more times than I care to remember. I am talking the flooding type of water, twice it was sewage backup that ruined over $100,000 of my audio/video system, along with much of my exercise equipment, even a treadmill and my Stamina Pilates Machine.

Maybe my wife understands the need "instant" for hot water, but I am happy with the time it takes my water to boil, in the microwave, for my instant coffee.

@hckynut it's a little water heater that is under the kitchen sink.  It has it's own little spigot that comes thru the hole that I think was originally meant for a soap dispenser.  Now, that is something I don't understand because it would be a pain to keep clean.

I prefer it over the microwave for hot water for a couple of reasons.  Boiling water or getting it hot but not quite boiling takes longer and it could "explode" on me.  Also, tea requires a temp less than boiling or it'll be bitter.  I can set it to a temp that's hot but not boiling and any time I want it I have steaming hot water on demand.

There are a lot of things I do "old school" when there might be quicker and easier ways to do it, but I just happen to like to have my instant hot water in the kitchen.

My Master Bath is the farthest from the water heater in our garage.  When we replace our shower head, it had one of those water restricting washers in it and I would end up running water in the sink to hasten how long it would take to get it to the shower.   Plus, it took forever to shower with long hair, so it really wasn't saving much water.  I pulled that thing out and reamed out those holes in the washer.
