Wow!  I haven't read all the responses to this  conversation, but just today my son was talking about this.  He has a friend who had this happen!  She locked her car, and the starter was hacked, and everything was stolen inside the car!  This happened in Seattle.

Reading this reminded me of a strange experience I had in a parking lot a couple weeks ago.  I was walking back to my car to load up groceries and leave.  A car parked next to me and used the key fob to lock their doors.  Right after I used my key fob to unlock my doors.  I ended up unlocking the doors of the car next to me instead of my own. I have a 10 year old car with remote start that I have never used.

I'm going to start using my old "Club" anti-theft devic to lock the steering wheel.  On my manual truck we already use a stick shift lock.
