@Carmie wroteWe are looking for protection from a virus, not bacteria. The microns from this virus are so small that some of them are passing through the medical N95 masks. Even they are only 95% effective.
Wearing a mask that is not a N19 is probably not doing any good at all...except for stimulating the economy.
Carmie - that is the mask my husband and I have been looking to buy and can not find anywhere. We see people with all kinds of masks and our PA Governor issued a statement yesterday that you have to wear a mask when you enter a store.
Well, if I wear a bandana (that I saw people wearing yesterday) I will not be helping. And will something like that be acceptable. Because a cotton bandana is not stopping any virus. My son brought home a mask that filters out a virus but the mask does not have a clip around the nose. Not sure that mask will be any help either.
Not sure what we will be wearing to get our food.
I am in PA too. Starting Sunday everyone must wear a mask to shop. My DH and I didn't have any or have any hair bands or bandanas to make them. It's too late to order any and have them by Sunday.
Our governor is a bone head sometimes. He travels everyday from York, which has a very high rate of COVID, to Harrisburg which cases are low, because he doesn't want to live in the Governor's Mansion provided for his use. That is really stupid.
With very little warning, he has mandated we wear masks when the N19's that do provide protection are Impossible to find. He also closed all the fabric stores, so you can't get fabric or supplies and Walmart is sold out.
He knows as do most people that those homemade masks do not work. The medical masks you can buy made from a paper like fabric are not effective either, but yet he wants people fined or removed from store without one.
The real kicker is that if you have a medical condition where a mask cannot be worn, you don't have to wear one...but no one can ask you what medical condition you have. Kids under two don't need a mask either.
My DH went to "visit" a family member yesterday who was working in his funeral home and got three medical paper masks. So, I guess I will have one to wear. I have severe spring allergies and right now and I am having trouble breathing through my nose.
If I can't breath with the mask on..I will remove it. I suppose I can use the medical excuse not to wear a mask and I don't have to tell them why.
If you see a crazy lady on the news who took her mask off to breath and got kicked out of the grocery store, that might be me.

@vermint wrote:My DH & I aren't wearing masks, either...so far, the cases are pretty low in our state, and extremely low in our area. I do see a very few people wearing them, mostly in the grocery store.
However, I did just order some masks from an Etsy seller that someone here recommended. They are 3 layers of cotton, and she has a lot of cute prints, too. Told DH we'd keep them in the car, just in case.
@vermint When I get out of the car, I put my mask on the dash. If you'll think of how hot your steering wheel gets in the sun, I figure the mask will get just as hot. Can't hurt for sure!![]()

When I was grocery shopping on the Friday before Easter the store was full of children. One young mother had an infant balancing on the edge of the cart in a baby carrier.
I wanted to say something, but kept my mouth closed. You can't fix stupid.

You know that guy who spits when he talks? The mask is to catch that so he doesn't spit virus on you or the can of beans you're about to buy. And to reduce clouds of moisture from people talking or coughing. Which is why you want everyone to wear them.
Also, when you wear one it keeps you from habitually touching your mouth or nose with the hand that just touched the beans that the guy without the mask just accidentally got spit on.
So masks are good. Everyone should wear one now if you can.
The people most at risk because of mass exposure at their job or the frailty of their health need to wear the fanciest masks. The rest of us just need good spit-shields/nose and mouth protectors.

Good idea, I agree.
As you know, while the CDC & the Governor reccommend it, NC does not currently mandate masks in public. ![]()

it helps me to keep in mind that my N95 mask 😷 keeps me from putting my hands on my face (because it is a reminder for me). I also wear either my glasses or sunglasses too, so I don't put my finger in my eye,
It helps when others wear masks too, because again, I appreciate reminders that we are all taking precautions.

@ECBG It makes me angry, because I'm sitting home, only out when essential, following regulations and others don't give a fig.

@Shanus I know. "Durn" frustrating! There can't be a policeman on every corner unfortunately. They're already picking up the criminals, and don't have enough to do that.

@ECBG Not hearing the usual news about crime, robberies or shootings. Think the criminals are scared to come out. Maybe the only good thing to come out of this....BUT....unemployment breeds some really strange behavior!!!

@Shanus Oh, The criminals are out from what I've read. They don't respect anyone's rights or life. They are self absorbed.
On a HAPPY NOTE!!!! I just found everything I need for Seven Layer Cookies with the coconut, and butterscotch!
