Re: Severe bruising and hematoma after stereotactic breast biopsy

[ Edited ]

When you say “the doctor” are you referring to the radiologist who read the mammogram, or a doctor who is a breast specialist?

In either event, if it were me, I would find a board certified breast specialist, call the

office, state that I wish to become a patient and explain my need to be seen ASAP as I have concerns regarding a recent stereotactic biopsy. Then, I would get my records & films to take to that appointment.

Incision area is painful and burning with a lump behind it. Bleeding a bit now that I am applying warm compresses. I have no peace of mind. Calling my medical doctor in the morning for referral to another breast specialist to check this and to follow me going forward.

I think that’s wise, and I’m wishing the best for you.

Hopefully your medical doctor will make the call to set you up with an appointment.  It may be that everything is okay, but it was irresponsible of the doctor to not offer to have you come in to put your mine at ease.  I have found with doctors you have to be your own best advocate and not take ****** from any doctor.  It you’re not satisfied with their treatment of you, move on.  Second opinions are typically more compassionate even just to make the original doctor look bad.

Well, the good news is that you don't have breast cancer so be a thankful and happy about that.  Some women aren't so lucky.  They'd be happy if they could exchange their cancer for some sorness and bruising.  You are going in to see them this Thursday, in all likelihood things will have improved since then and you have ample opportunity to discuss it with them at that visit.  I'm sure that after the procedure, they did give you a handout that explained what to expect after the procedure.  Something very much like this.

   After the procedure

This kind of biopsy does not need stitches. The radiologist will dress the incision area using steri-strips and may apply pressure for up to 5 minutes to stop or prevent bleeding.
After the procedure, the person may experience:
bruising
swelling
soreness
Ice and over-the-counter pain relievers can help.
The person should contact their doctor if they notice:
redness
heat
draining of fluid
severe swelling and bleeding
These may be the sign of an infection that needs treatment.
People should avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours, but they can resume normal activities after that.
Results and how doct

My heart certainly goes out to all the women who have not been as fortunate at me and have, or are enduring cancer treatment.  The reason for my posting was to gain other's experiences as I feel the complications I have going on are not typical and my questions and concerns are being downplayed by the doctor.

My post op visit was maybe three minutes and I was told results were fine and come back in 6 months. The hematoma was not even mentioned or how to care for it . I am not fine and my medical doctor saw me right away when I called (though the MA I spoke to when I called told me "no one will want to see me and I have to go back to the doctor who did the procedure." She agreed to check with my doctor who said she would see me in 45 minutes if I could be there which I was. She orderded an ultrasound  which I am having this morning to measure the size of the hematoma so it can be monitored until resolved. Why didn't the surgeon do this or give me information on why it happens and how to care for it? My brusing and trauma is out of the ordinary.

I feel the typical instruction sheet does not address what I have going on as it is more like an injury.

I remain concerned but more at ease that someone is answering my questions and following up. We must all be advocates for ourselves and seek the answers and care that bring peace of mind.

Re: Severe bruising and hematoma after stereotactic breast biopsy

I'm sure you are very grateful that is isn't cancer.  However it doesn't mean that you shouldn't be concerned about other complications!  I love how some feel the need to let you know that you should feel a certain way.

I would be very concerned if it were me and annoyed with the doctor who seems to make light of it.  It could be an infection or something serious if it's as you say.  I would insist on seeing the doctor or someone new.

I hope you will heal soon from this traumatic event. I can well imagine your concern. You are so right, we have to advocate for ourselves where our health is concerned.

Yes, I should have but I had no idea this procedure could turn out like this. The cluster of calcifications is an indication of possible DCIS with 85% being ok so I really didn't think the procedure was anything major but have read it is ordered in excess.

I don't understand this statement?
