A great lesson for all. I have been guilty of changing appointments because of not finding it convenient at the time......no more, thank you for sharing.

It is an amazing kindness on your part to have posted. Sincerely hoping that your FIL recovers well and has access to excellent rehab services.

EVERYONE of a certain age should take charge of this silent killer by finding out what his or her BP is, finding out if it needs to be lowered, and finding out how to do that.

Medication is not always the answer, but finding out what your numbers are is always the first step, and elevated blood pressure can be totally symptom free.

Two of my dear relatives got blood pressure readings at a non health related seminar, and both were shocked to learn that their readings were horribly high.

FIND OUT! Your life may depend upon what you know.

I feel your pain - my mom had a stroke when I was in high school - changed her life completely, and ours.  I am on high blood pressure meds and take them religiously - it took a good doctor to put me on meds.  I went to a dr for 11 years with high blood pressure and she never mentioned it.  My new dr is from India and she is wonderful and it was the first thing she mentioned when I went to her.  I trust her implicitly.

So glad that he's alright @Pooky1.  Light stroke or regular one?  May I ask his age and what, if any, symptoms he had?  Let's hope it doesn't happen again.

A couple of weeks ago, I awakened with extreme pain in my neck.  The pain would come every five minutes on the right side.  When my husband saw that I groaned loudly every time it hit along with tears in my eyes he told me to get dressed to go to the emergency room.  Turned out to be Acute Torticulloous (sp?).  Extreme spasms of the neck and the doctor could visually see my neck moving.  We thought I might be having a stroke.  At 69, I know I can't take unfamiliar pain casually.

By the way, thank God for Medicare and my supplemental insurance.  ER was $596 and the doctor charged close to $900!  He saw me less than 15 minutes.

@Pooky1

I hope your father-in-law recovers well. My wife had a stroke back in late December, 2013. It was not a lack of doing her best to stay healthy or not taking prescribed meds. They never really found the exact cause, but it was not high blood pressure.

It is unfortunate that so many can hear/read and even see how/why many life threatening issues happen to people, even one's they know. Yet think, for some strange reason, these things happen only to "other people".

Said it on this same forum for many years now. "Too many people take better care of their vehicles than they do their body". How many do most here know, that let their vehicle engines blow apart, before having oil changes and other protective maintenance performed? I don't know a single one, and cars were my main passion for many, many years.

Some that let these things go get 2nd chances, others live with disabilities because of procrastination, others never get a 2nd chance.

Even many that get that second chance, for some reason, think, now that "I have had mine", I am good to go. I met way too many of those types of people in my 72 Cardiac Rehabilitation Classes. Boggled my mind, but some can rationalize anything to themselves.

Glad you are going to be consistent with taking your BP meds. I always have my BP cuff close to me when home, and though I have never had high BP, I still check it on a regular basis. If fact, that is what confirmed to me I was having my 2nd heart attack. Good tool for everyone to have, high BP or not.

I hope your FIL will be okay. Sorry he had a stroke.

My mother had a stroke caused from LOW BP. Strange, I know but it happened.

@Mmsfoxxie

Sounds like your husband is a fine man and he obviously he loves you very much. When in doubt? Minutes delayed can often have make a bigger difference than many realize.

Glad you found out the cause and know the cause. As far as cost? It is what it is, but hopefully it will change for the better soon. Yes, Medicare and my secondary, also cover a big share of our medical expenses.
