My hygienist says to brush first, then floss, last thing at night and don't rinse the toothpaste out of your mouth to allow it to work.  Not rinsing is taking some time to get used to. In the morning, I brush, floss, then use the water pic. Funny how so many hygienists recommend so many different ways, the important thing is that you do both.

@Carolina925  Am I understanding she said to not rinse it out at all.  If so, you'd be ingesting that toothpaste every day and that may not be good for your general health.

@decaf @Carolina925. Seems like the only reason this might be beneficial is if using fluoride toothpaste.  The instructions on regular toothpaste say to rinse after using.  Prescription fluoride says not to rinse or drink for 30 min.

Re: Which do you do first???

I don't floss (my teeth are very close together and its difficult) but I religiously use a Butler tool as well as a spin brush.  I am in my late 70s, have all my teeth and go to the dentist for cleanings and checkups twice a year; my teeth are in great shape.

Re: Which do you do first???

Thank you all for your responses.  Looks like it is fairly split between brushing before and after flossing.  Will have to let my son know that it doesn't really seem to matter when, just matters that you do it!

Re: Which do you do first???

I definitely do floss/waterpik/proxabrush (one or two of those) BEFORE I brush my teeth.

For whatever reason, in my weird brain, I just feel like if I brushed my teeth first I'd end up pushing food debris into my gums and I don't want to do that.  I figure getting it all cleaned out beforehand makes the most sense, then brushing.    Smiley Happy

I find that the waterpik and the proxabrush are more effective than floss, so I probably do those the most.

I brush with an electric toothbrush. I hardly ever floss. Usually only if something is stuck in between my teeth.

I use interdetal brushes instead of floss. I use them after I eat something.

I have a prescription toothpaste for sensitive teeth that says not to rinse or drink anything for 30 minutes.  I don't consider that my main toothpaste, so I have to brush, water floss, then use that product which is a real pain.  As a result, I only use it when my teeth start acting up.  My insurance will no longer cover it when I run out anyways, but a friend of mine gave me hers saying it didn't work for her.
