@cherry, unfortunately we have to rely a lot on pure protein combined with fat. Carbohydrates really drive up blood sugars no matter how much insulin or oral meds are utilized.

 

It really is a difficult balance. And as you know, many of us have tried going the Plant based route only to see our A1C's skyrocket from all the carbohydrates. Been there done that.....

You can buy lean ground beef. Look for 90% lean . The fat will cook out a lot. Blot the meat on a paper towel. 

 

If it's fried loose drain it in a colander. You can also pour boiling water over it in the colander, and more fat will drain off.

 

Lots of choices have to be made. Fruit flavored yogurts are full of sugar.  Fruit can give you a carb overload if you aren't careful, so can vegetables

 

We all don't process food the same way. You have to experiment a bit ,to see what works best for you

Actually, FWIW - foods like steak & hamburger which are very high in saturated fats are VERY BAD for diabetics to consume. Diabetics need to limit their fat intake just as much as their carbohydrate intake.


 

 

So, you just decided to ignore everything I said in my first paragraph? You know, the parts that said better (not best)  than many other things an ill person might decide to choose. And the part about buying lean meats? Humans cannot live without some fat. I doubt someone who isn't feeling that great is going to go through a package of hot dogs, or multiple steaks in a week.  Most people should indeed limit their fat intake, not eliminate it by never eating any.

As all diabetics eventually learn, each diabetic body is different. How one person is affected by a food is not necessarily the way that food will affect someone else. Person A may eat a carton of yogurt and spike, while person B will eat the same yogurt and their BG remains within limits. The only way each individual will know how many carbs and from what they can eat or should not eat very often is by finger sticks & testing BG.

 

Carbohydrates in and of themselves don't "drive up" my BG unless I eat way too many at a meal. I'm not afraid of eating carbs - we need them. I don't use insulin, and my ordinary (neither low dose nor high) oral meds take care of my BG and give me a healthy a1c. 

 

What any given person must specifically eat or not eat to keep their BG in good shape is peculiar to them, not all diabetics.

@151949 I figured the steak or hamburger is ok but it's what comes with the meal that's not. He will go to Outback for a steak with the Blooming Onion etc. His main problem is not eating when his sugar is high or eating candy when it's low. We keep trying to tell him to eat small amounts thru the day to keep his sugar level. He only weighs about 120 lbs & looks awful. I know he takes coumadin, insulin, statin drug & not sure what else. He has a blockage in his brain so I think that's why he takes the coumadin. He has had it for years but passed on the surgery as he wanted to keep living his life as it is in case something goes wrong. I don't think he really has a clue as to how he should be eating. He's just going by what the doctor told him with no potatoes, bread, rice, pasta etc like you said. He needs to see a nutritionist that can help him out. He just does not want to deal with it. He does not have much feeling in his feet. He scoots his feet across the floor when he walks instead of picking his feet up. He's afraid he will have to have his feet or legs amputated at some point & said that was not happening. If he's still alive when this becomes necessary I think we know what he's going to do which is not good.

This is a small bit of information, but DBIL whose body is failing on so many levels including having Diabetes, was told to drink Boost.

Might want to call the doctor's office and check.

He takes Metaformin also.

He had nerve damage in his feet which makes walking difficult.

 

The soups sound like a possible alternative.

 

I hope you are feeling better by now, but would not hesitate to call the MD even if you have to bug them.😄

I also live in a rural community and I'm also 73. I drive 3.5 hrs to go to a good hospitalised and I do it because my health is important!

When I don't feel well, I will soft boil two eggs and put two slices of Multi-grain bread (pulled apart into pieces except for most of the crust). I put nothing on the bread.  I take the eggs and get them out of the shells (I crack them and then use a teaspoon to scoop out all the egg making sure I don't get egg shell in it).  I then mix the bread and two eggs together well. If it's a little cool, I microwave it 20 seconds.

 

This little meal (carb and protein) without any oils or butter has been in my family for generations and we always feel good after eating it. Remember the carb count from your bread and only use complex carbs (no white bread).

 

Hope this makes you feel good..... when my boys were little they would call it "Buppy" and always asked for it when they were sick.  Take care....  


@Q4u...you reminded me of my dad. He used to do that with the soft boiled eggs and bread. He died in 1974, but it's a nice memory-Smiley Happy
