It is said that the worry about not sleeping contributes to the problem.

Ironic, isn't it ?   Being unable to sleep upset us and yet, that makes the problem even worse.  I actually saw a sleep specialist many years ago and did say that tossing and turning and worrying about created insomnia.  Everyone has sleep issues occasionally but it resolves itself.  He gave me a Sleep Hygiene list.  It worked for me.  I still do some of those things when I can't sleep for a night or two.

This may seem like a rather odd suggestion, but it works for me.  If I find I am not able to fall asleep because my mind is racing, I think of the color black.  With my eyes closed, I see black.  If a thought crreeps into my thoughts, I remind myself to just think and see black.

What do I do?  Get out of my recliner and climb onto 1 of my recumbent bikes. Can't sleep? Get up and move doing something that takes a little effort, not too much, not too little. Never fails me, BUTT! I seldom have a problem going to sleep, and 4-5 hours is plenty for me, be it night time or the wee hours.

@hckynut   Me too.  I can function ok on 4 or 5, but 6 is about optimum and 7 is if I really am exhausted and crash. I have been a nightowl my entire life.  My dad only got 4 or 5 hours and if my mother complained he'd say "Thomas Alva Edison only slept 4 hours a night."

Whether that's true I don't know, but that was his justification.  They gave up on keeping me in bed and asleep very early on I think!
