Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

Hi, everyone.  I want to share how good I feel and why.  Some of you might have seen a post that I made in another thread somewhere about how much working out has helped me this year.

I was a fairly active person when I was working.  I retired in June of 2015 and unconsciously decided that I was going to take a vacation from any movement other than housework related.  Now most of you know that's not really exercising because you can do it as slowly as you want.  And I did.

For quite a few years I have had arthritis, especially in my knees.  In 2014, while still working, I had knee injections after having difficulty walking and they worked well..one in each knee.  In March of 2016, I had to have injections again.  Didn't seem to work as well.  Around that time, I also noticed that my shoulder was hurting often, my back bothered me and to pick something up from the floor was difficult.

I finally put what was happening to my body together.  It wasn't just turning 69 that was the problem.  My inactivity was the problem.  If you don't use it, you lose it.  Bingo!

The medical network that I belonged to often sent me emails about their fitness center facility and I started paying attention to what was offered there.  I went for a visit/tour.  Before the representative was finished with the tour I told her to sign me up.

That was in May of this year.  I go 5 or 6 days a week if I don't have appointments, which I usually don't.  Once in a while, I'll go on Sunday, too, just to get a good walk in.

My physical stamina and ability has improved so much that I am amazed.  I can pick things up with ease.  I usually do a 2 mile walk and an exercise class everyday except Sunday when only walking or swimming is available.  I don't swim but that's another story, lol.  My body wasn't turning into stone after all!

You will never hear me say I love exercising but I love what it does for my body.  I still have bad knees but they hardly ever bother me.  If I get crazy and wak 4 miles, I definitely have a problem the next day.  My shoulder and back hardly ever bother me either.  I've learned to be sensible in how much I do daily.  Consistency is the key, not how long each workout is.  I went out of town for a few days and actually missed it, lol.

Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

@Mmsfoxxie, welcome! If you've been reading the exercise threads, you know we post about our activity each say...and other things, too. Our little community is fun and motivating. Hope you'll keep posting.

Congratulations on your success. Like you, I can't really say I enjoy working out, but I do it because I know the benefits are huge. Our bodies were meant to move, and there are consequences if we don't. You've done great! Glad you can see the benefits. That sure helps keep motivation going.

Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

Thank you for the welcome, @nomless.  I've been lurking for quite a while and since I was feeling my blessing of feeling good so much today (plus the start of a new thread month), I decided to post.

I had to go to the social security board today before my workout.  If you've ever been there, you know you have a long wait and it's a good time to observe people.  There were so many people of my age there that had problems walking or were in wheelchairs.  One man sitting next to me happened to ask me questions about Medicare.  He had a limp and I was stunned when he said that he was just curious about it but wouldn't need Medicare until he was 65, in 2 more years.  He looked older than me.  I felt so blessed for decent health while I was sitting thus my rant to you this evening.

I will definitely post again.

Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

Thank you, @Laura14.

I had a fun workout today but with a slight handicap.  It wasn't long after I started my walk at the center that I realized the underwear that I selected was not a good fit for walking with a purpose, lol.  I had to discreetly pull and redistribute every few yards, lol.  Note to self...don't wear these for exercising again.

Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

@nomless  Congrats on getting through your first day!!  I know it's a lot at first.  You're bringing me back to my days in the children's department.  I loved that job but you are always moving.  You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Did my Power and Pound combo this morning.  We had a sub for Power who did an old routine and I kind of liked it.  Don't like her style though.  Why some instructors think they are teaching a kindergarten class is beyond me.  It's 5:30am.  Just cue the music and let's roll.  No one wants to recite muscle groups.  As long as they look good after we're done, we got it.

I've decided November is going to be a renewal month for me.  Time to try new things.  It's going to be a very hard month at work so I'm preparing now for stress releasers.  I keep waiting for the weather to actually become fall.  We are still in the mid 80s.  We've never been this warm this late.  It's ridiculous.

Post that above paragraph when I'm complaining about the cold later in the year or early next.  If it ever gets here. If I have to break out the shorts for Christmas again, I'm taking a vacation north in January.

Re: Welcome to the November Exercise Thread

@Laura14, good job doing Power and Pound this morning. Don't know how you do it at 5:30. That's dedication!

My quads were sore this morning from the multitude of squats I did yesterday. I got through day 2, another day of shelving. Eventually she'll show me other stuff that will be sit-down work, but for now she wants me to shelve each collection type so that I'm familiar with it. Makes sense. So I'm pooped again tonight. She's going to be a great boss.

No workout today. The job is providing enough activity for now. I'll do something tomorrow...
