Who did you go see to have vericose veins taken care of? I wear the support hose...take supplements....use creams for the itching....

After years of dealing with this one area on my left leg, now my ankle swells  even wearing the compression stocking. It feels like a knot in my calf at times too.

any info would be helpful.  And what procedure you had. I know many procedures are out patient today.

A cardiologist is a vein expert.

There is also a type of specialist called a Vascular surgeon.

I've seen Vein clinics, not sure what that's about.

But if it were me, I would talk to a specialist first.

It could be minor, or not.

Your internist is the best doctor to look at your vericosity problem and he/she can make recommendations.

Here is my story:  I had a vericosity in my left leg for years, as time progressed and I got older it got bigger, running from back of leg just below knee all the way down into ankle; at its widest point about 1 inch.  It was so obnoxious and protruded so much it actually looked like a snake on the back of my leg and it cast a shadow in the sun.  It itched constantly, I went to a vein center (early 1990's, about age 50), said they could not do anything due to size, internist recommended vascular surgeon who said vein stripping best solution due to size and protrusion, I could bump something, being close to skin could break and cause a bleed.  Vein-strip surgery done, went home same day, wore compression stockings until fully healed and gradually left stockings behind. It was explained that other veins would take over for the one that was removed (stripped). Surgeon concerned the vein extended into my foot with all the small bones but I got lucky. The only problem I had was finding out allergic to pain meds with opoids. Never had any more problems in my left leg after that procedure. [Might I add, my OB-GYN had recommended I wear compression hose (which I did) the whole time I was pregnant with both children in my late 20's.]  Later years I had other vein problems in legs but nothing as massive as previous; taken care of routinely by a vascular surgeon without stip procedure; done and home same day, no pain med needed. Since that time have taken Lessman Vein Support Supplements since my veins need to be strong in my lower extremeties.

My mother had vericosities in her legs, not bad and of course never treated in any form; my generation faired better with treatment and procedures available as vascular knowledge increased.

Might I also add vericosities can be due to your gene pool, obesity and/or pregnancy.  Neither my mother nor I were obese and I had very strong legs due to ballet dance instruction as a child, exercise and general good health.  My mother gave birth to me age 40 which back in early 1940's was not easy on women due to maternal care knowledge.

Here in my city there are 'vein clinics' where they take care of stuff like that. The clinics are run by groups of doctors who are specialists in vein care.

I have a nickle sized knot of veins the result of three knee surgeries.  Painful!

The procedure described for me was hot water and laser.  Due to concern about resultant nerve damage I’m still thinking.

Still, seeing a surgeon gave me the answers I needed, and clarity as to what was causing the pain.

My advise....quit wasting your time and money with supplements and stockings, as it’s not going to go away. Make an appointment with a vascular surgeon and get an opinion and if surgery is recommended then have it done and taken care of once and for all. There are different kinds of varicose veins and many are painful. I had mine removed last fall and I’m glad I did. Good luck!
