OP, this reminds me - if you want to know what your A1C (cumulative blood sugar over the last 90 days) is and your doctor hasn't done one or you want to know "now" you can buy A1C kits at CVS and probably other pharmacies, following the instructions to provide a blood sample. You mail it in, and in a week or so they send you your results. Over 6 is not great, and over 6.5 your doctor should be unhappy.

It's funny (not ha, ha funny) because last month mine was 6.7 and I thought, "oh boy, he's not going to be happy". He said it used to be that they did not want it over 6 but now the standard has gone to 7 and under. He did say that he would prefer it to be lower but he did not seem fazed at all. Things that make you shake your head huh???

That would make me re-think my doctor. There are limits. I think some doctors (my office included) often just don't want to deal they can be in denial too. Yikes!

Huh?? Whenever my bs isn't where I want it I jump on my treadmill for a good workout and walla! my bs is back down to the normal range! This is how I keep my A1C levels in the 5's!

Yep that, is true. I was in the hospital for three months and all the insulin they were giving me was not working.once I got out and became active again one shot in the morning and they are normal.

OMG this is why you shouldn't ask for medical advice on a shopping channel message board.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes question....

OP, you didn't say when you tested. If it was too close to your hotdog meal, it could be very high but then have gone down significantly. I have found it more helpful to see a doctor who specializes in diabetes, rather than a GP. Do NOT be scared of insulin. It becomes very easy quickly and believe me, I was scared silly of injecting myself.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes question....

OP, you need to attend diabetes education classes or make an appointment with a licensed diabetes dietician. You can't lower your sugar level by eating anything!! As someone else stated, your reading depends on how soon after a meal you took it.

Please get better informed on dealing with your diabetes. I say this as a type 2 diabetic.

I have found that daily exercise is a HUGE benefit in controlling diabetes.

It took me a few weeks to get the courage. But after I did it I was like that was it. It doesn't even hurt and the pens make it so easy.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes question....

Metformin is not a magic pill that allows you to eat whatever and keep you blood sugar low. You should be eating better food and more often. Three meals and two or three small snacks. You have to know what kinds of foods to eat to keep, your blood sugar under control. Someone mentioned the diabetes classes at your local hospital. If they have them go, they are very helpful. Diabetes even type two is not a joke. If you're like my father and just eat what you want anyway, you will have numerous problems like he does now at age 85. Stress may affect your readings but there is a lot more to it. If your life is too stressful look at areas you can cut some of the stress down. If you are the one taking care of everyone else then it's really important for you to take care of yourself first.

Re: Type 2 Diabetes question....

As long as Metformin is being discussed so much, what side effects has anyone experienced?

Re: Type 2 Diabetes question....

Every person is different. For instance I take twenty units of insulin in the morning. I still have my pop at lunch and I can still have sweets. I only weigh one hundred pounds. Of course nothing in excess. My long term last time was 5.9 and I rarely have a sugar over one hundred before meals. It is low enough now that I could switch to pills but why change what is working and I can still enjoy my favorite foods.
