Anyone have toe straightening surgery?  Is it very painful?  Having four toes on each foot done.  Of course each foot will be done at different times.

The surgery pain doesn't last long, but the inability to walk normally will last for a few months.  Very inconvenient.

I had all 5 toes straightened on my left foot at one time about 25 years ago.  Due to an accident, tendons in the toes "curled up".

Woke up from surgery and had 5 long pins sticking out from each toe.

I didn't even have to stay in the hospital....arrived early morning, had surgery, came home in the late afternoon.

The most painful part was that night -- but took pain pills for about a day afterwards and then no pain at all.

Was on crutches for about 6 weeks.  Then went in to have the pins removed.  No pain when they were removed.

Best thing I ever did.

Good luck!

My late FIL had this procedure done on both feet, due to rheumatoid arthritis curling his toes under.  Thankfully his doctor fixed one foot at a time, as it was extremely painful and difficult for him to get around.  Once the healing was complete, his toes looked normal again, and walking was so much easier.

I had two toes on each foot done on the same day.  I had tendon transfers so that it never happens again.  Mine was done by an orthopedist specializing in foot and ankle problems.  I was laid up about three months.  I had pins and special shoes for 6 week and non weight bearing for 6 weeks.  I walked with a walker up until the pins were removed.  It was tedious, a lot of swelling but not too painful and took very little pain medication.  The toes still look good 5 years later.

When one has surgery like this are you total non weight bearing on that foot or are you on crutches but allowed to put your heel down to help with balance? My cousin had bunion surgery and she was allowed to put her heel down to balance but no weight on it. When I had my ankle rebuilt it was total no weight on the foot or even touching it down for 4  months, then it was a full month more before I was allowed to put full weight on it.

With toe straightening surgery you CANNOT put weight on the foot at all until your pins are removed and then, based on the individual situation, your surgeon will let you know how to proceed.

With my surgery (all 5 toes at once on one foot) - I was able to put weight but had to use one crutch until my foot became used to the weight again.
