@halfpint1,

Regarding the fan that no longer works, does it still have power going to it?   If so, that is not safe.

Wait, so let me get this straight.

Even with foam earplugs in, you are still hearing noises, and only in your home, and no where else, is that correct?

This might be psychological, due to stress.

Maybe subconsciously you don't like being alone, and don't want to be alone, so your brain creates noises that don't exist, so that you'll have some come over to check it out , or you go over to your sons.

Either way, you end up not alone.

I have tinnitus and there are days when I would do almost anything to make it go away.  It is  mostly in my right ear, the ringing never stops.  Because I don't sleep well due to chronic pain I notice the ringing gets worse during the night and early morning.

I have narrow ear canals and have my ears irrigated every four to six months and am also suffering from hearing loss.  I don't know how much hearing aids will help because since insurance doesn't cover them it prohibits me from wearing them, way too expensive.  Oh, and sometimes I feel there is an ocean roaring in my head, very annoying and distracting to say the least. @halfpint1 If the sound seems to be coming from the attic have someone check your vents, they can be located on the gable ends or on the roof & some have a small motor. We had one that started making an annoying buzzing noise, it only happened when it ran on warm days taking the heat out of the attic. Are you hearing the sound everyday? Is it coming from the attic, basement, main floor or can you tell?

Thank you all for your replies. It seems that what you are saying tinitus is all the time not just in my house. My son still can not hear what I am hearing. I do not know what to do since I was told if the technicians can't hear the noise they do not what to do either. If that is the case I just have to hold onto my sanity. Thanks again for your input.

I have tinnitus. It started about 7 years ago. I thought it was the noise of the fan from the ac/heatpump that was right outside the window where I worked. The fan had a bearing going bad and there was a squeal when the fan was running.

Well, they fixed the ac/heatpump and I still heard a squeal. And it has never stopped and in fact seems to get louder with time. I think it is from my thyroid medicine. My medicine has been increased 3 times.

I have gone to an audiologist and ENT Doctor. Both said nothing can be done. I did get hearing aids. Can't say they are much of an improvement but they amplify peoples voices above the squeal of tinnitus.

You are so right - it is hard to take.

My doctor said the Lipoflavinoids do nothing.  She said in two years there is a drug coming out for it (so in another year because she said this last year).

Tinnitus sounds are nonstop, if you're hearing something only at night in your home & not during the day or at your son's then something else is going on. It could be lots of things, an animal in the attic or an electrical buzzing from something in your home that is running at night or ?. Please ask someone to stay at your home to figure out the source, this ongoing situation is not good for your health. I wish you well. For follow tinnitus suffers...I've had tinnitus for years, can't remember silence anymore. Mine sounds like a tornado siren at full blast so there is no masking it & it's distressing to be dismissed with comments that it's just a little humming noise so get over it. Tinnitus is difficult & my heart goes out to others suffering, I wish you well too.

DH has that. He says it is a constant chirping noise and has learned to mentally block it out most of the time. It does impair his hearing. For example he says he cannot hear birds chirping and certain frequencies.

Sounds familiar.  My DH was in the Air Force for 20 years and around jet engines.  He, also, cannot hear birds, crickets, etc.  He cannot hear the microwave.  I have to tell him "your coffee is ready", he knows when the micro shuts off, just not the beep beep.  He also cannot hear certain frequencies.  When we watch TV, I will turn up the sound and ask him if he can hear it and he'll say "if you turn it down a little, I can hear it better"......  So, he's not hard of hearing, just certain frequencies, as you said.

@sophiamarie

I have hearing loss at certain frequencies.  Hearing aids help.
