Tinnitus sounds are nonstop, if you're hearing something only at night in your home & not during the day or at your son's then something else is going on. It could be lots of things, an animal in the attic or an electrical buzzing from something in your home that is running at night or ?. Please ask someone to stay at your home to figure out the source, this ongoing situation is not good for your health. I wish you well. For follow tinnitus suffers...I've had tinnitus for years, can't remember silence anymore. Mine sounds like a tornado siren at full blast so there is no masking it & it's distressing to be dismissed with comments that it's just a little humming noise so get over it. Tinnitus is difficult & my heart goes out to others suffering, I wish you well too.

DH has that. He says it is a constant chirping noise and has learned to mentally block it out most of the time. It does impair his hearing. For example he says he cannot hear birds chirping and certain frequencies.

Sounds familiar.  My DH was in the Air Force for 20 years and around jet engines.  He, also, cannot hear birds, crickets, etc.  He cannot hear the microwave.  I have to tell him "your coffee is ready", he knows when the micro shuts off, just not the beep beep.  He also cannot hear certain frequencies.  When we watch TV, I will turn up the sound and ask him if he can hear it and he'll say "if you turn it down a little, I can hear it better"......  So, he's not hard of hearing, just certain frequencies, as you said.

I know that caffeine will make tinnitus worse.

According to my ENT ... mine was related to hearng loss.  I now wear hearing aids.

I only "hear" it now when I take out the hearing aids ... but I guess I'm used to it since it doesn't bother me at all anymore.  It's just there ....

@halfpint1

This is the kind of tinnitus I have.  A rushing air sound that is always with me.  Sometimes it is loud and sometimes soft (like now) but it never goes away.   I hardly notice it anymore.

I have read that some people have other tinnitus sounds which are really irritating.  I have never experienced them myself.  I am grateful for that, because I have never heard of a cure either.

The rushing air sounds clear to me, but when I ask others if they can hear it the answer is always "No".

I only hear it at my house day or night. I wish I knew if a motor runs even when off like a fridge. The ac people don't want to bother with me because they don't hear anything. The company that sold us the ac hung up on me the last time I called since they don't hear noise. Today the noise is running most of the day.

@halfpint1, so you only hear the noise in your home, and nowhere else? As others have said, and in my own case, the tinnitus sound is continual.

Have you thought about recording the sound? Maybe try different locations.
