@patofl wrote:Those on pain meds for cronic painful health issues, how do you deal with the constpation that comes from the use of these drugs? I'm only on 50mg of Tramadol, which isn't too strong of a pain med. However, even though I can take up to 1 every 8 hours , I can actually only take one a day because if I take more I just get all bound up! For this reason I never take more than one pain med a day, and, of course, it doesn't last all day. My doctor recommended I take a pericolace with it, and I do. It seems to help some. He warned me it isn't a good idea to take daily laxatives as you can get dependant on them , and be unable to go without them. So I'm wondering what others do about this.
Your doctor should be more concerned about your taking pain meds and becoming dependent on THOSE ...... not taking herbal laxatives and becoming dependent on them! Just take some senna extact....found in most laxatives.... Easy fix. If you are all bound up... that is worse than taking an herbal laxative to get things moving....
Taking in more Fiber and taking prescription pain meds can lead to blocking you up MORE. lots of fiber is not always a great answer to constipation caused by pain meds.

So I had been prescribed Tramadol after surgery many years ago; it was constipating, but just did not work for pain! It did not seem any better than taking Advil.
Of course I needed some thing stronger and doc did change meds; I can't remember the name of the new medicine. My point - I did not have constipation problems with new med which did work on pain. Maybe doc can prescribe another pain med that is not so constipating!

Drink a lot of water and don't take fiber supplements like Benefiber without drinking a lot of water!!
Some fruits that work are grapes, apples, grapefruits, watermelon, mango.
Try Miralax. If more help needed try senna or duclolax

One half hour before breakfast . Mix 1/4 cup lemon juicewith 1 cup hot water. You can add sugar if you do not like the tartness but drink it while hot [like tea] . Do this every morning . The doctor told my mom this when I was a child because I had constipation problems .It works and is natural You can use bottled lemon or real lemon juice.

A nurse told me to heat up a small cup of prune juice with a pat of butter melted in it after I had surgery a few years back & was on some pain meds. It worked quite well & didn't taste bad at all. My mom used to heat up prune juice to drink when she was constipated, though she never used the pat of butter in it.

@corita Unfortunately, I have other health issues that prevent me from using any NSAID and because this is a cronic disease I don't want to start into opiods because I'll be likely on pain meds the remainder of my life.Which leaves me at this point on Tramadol, Tylenol and Aspirin. The Tylenol and asprin are not strong enough.Tramadol does work sufficiently for me. I take one in the morning so I can get showered and get my housework done while it is in effect.By about 3 to 4 PM it has pretty much worn off and if I take another I'll be sorry because of the constipation.I've tried most of what has been mentioned in this thread. I usually have coffee in the morning and at lunch which is the most effective. The 50mg I take is a low dose for Tramadol, so the doc doesn't feel I should take any less.

This is what the pediatrician told my neice to do when her newborn baby wasn't pooping. It worked for him.He liked the prune juice & would drink it right down.

Please try prunes. I took laxatives for 25 years but have now for years been eating 4 prunes per evening and they do the trick. I have always liked prunes so this was an easy choice. Give it a try.

So sorry, hope that some of the suggestoins here will work for you. It is bad enough to have surgery and then have to deal with after effects...
