I have a root canal scheduled for Thursday Morning at 8Am... until then I have to hang in there and suffer with a terrible toothache for today and tomorrow.... I am miserable.. taking aspirin, Tylenol, codeine... rotating them as to not over medicate. but  even that is not stopping the pain...... my sleep last night was terrible... it just throbs and aches so bad no matter what I do.   can not chew or eat...

I guess there really is nothing to help... maybe just some sympathy is all  I am looking for......  This is the worst pain.

Have the dentist put you on antibiotics. You have an infection. You should have been on them from the start. Maybe they can get you in sooner if you let them know how bad the pain is. I've been a dental hygienist for 37 years. I've seen this emergency many times good luck.

@SeaMaiden I'm so sorry you are hurting.  I understand how difficult it is to feel continuous pain until it can be helped by a Dr.

I would caution you about taking very much Tylenol or any of the medicine you'd mentioned you've been taking because they cause the blood to become thinner.  Ordinarily, that might not be a problem for you.  However, since you are having a root canal, that involves some (not a lot but some) bleeding.  This could potentially become a problem for you and the dentist (make it more difficult to complete the root canal).

I would think the dentist would have given you some ideas on things to take for the pain. Here are a few things:

http://www.rd.com/health/conditions/home-remedies-for-toothache/

I just googled:  What are some things that ease a toothache/help a toothache, etc.

Hope this helps.  In the last two years I've had so many root canals, you name it.

All of the medicine I take causes dry mouth.  It is terrible.  It has caused my teeth to decay.  Until about 2 years ago I didn't have any, yes, I said I didn't have any bad teeth.  Now my dentist is having trouble keeping up with the tooth problems.

Dry mouth is terrible.  I even take a prescription that is specifically for dry mouth.  Make sure your tooth decay isn't due to that.

Please come back after your root canal and let your words tell us you are feeling so much better.  Take care.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I have a crown that gets terribly painful whenever I have sinus problems or a sinus infection and it can be so awful that I can't eat without crying. I'm sorry that you have to experience that and I hope the root canal will address your problem and resolve the pain. I wish you the best until Thursday.

I wish I had an effective home remedy to offer to help you get through Thursday, but I have nothing. You can try Ambesol, which only helps a little, but sometimes even a little help is something.

Call the dentist back and tell them the pain meds are not working. You shouldn't have to suffer for 2 more days.

@missy mouse  I asked the person I set the appointment up with about antibiotics and she said they did not give them out anymore... I know that prior toothaches and dental work they gave me antibiotics and it gave me great relief from the pain. Maybe I will call her and see it I can get some.

Can you get some oil of clove? It's natural and helps with the pain.

Don't even think about MAYBE, hurry up and call, if they have any mercy they'll get you in today, or get you on a good antibiotic. Surely they don't expect you to suffer like that for 2 more days and they have no way of knowing you are unless you tell them.

My dentist would see me IMMEDIATELY if I were having ANY kind of problem that caused pain.  Yours should too.

My dentist would consider that an emergency and do what he could to get me relief until the root canal day (asuming that's a different dentist/specialist than your regular).  If it's being done by your regular dentist, I think it's unthinkable to have you wait so long for pain relief...either by rearranging appointments to do your R/C NOW!  Or give you other means of pain relief.  Thursday seems like a long, long day off when one is in that kind of pain!
