I Had a new crown put on am upper left molar a month ago... ($600).... The tooth kind of bothering me over the past month... went in for my regular cleaning on Monday last... told hygenist about the tooth still a bit being sensitive...My dentist came looked at it and suggested going to the root canal specialist in the same building to get their imput on it...( I am not new to root canals... have had about 5 already....)
went to see root canal person on Wednesday... took all kinds of fancy xrays of my head 360 degree...etc... $160.00....
She said there was a lot of infection around the root... that a root canal will not most likely clean that up... she left it up to me to decide if I wanted to go with a root canal...($1200) and still possible pulling of the tooth afterwards anyway... or just pull the tooth... I wanted her to TELL ME WHAT TO DO...but no....
Now the dilema... what to do... I am not in serious discomfort at this time... but of course as you know with teeth... that can change at any momment...
Not here for answers.... just wanted to let out my frustration....
Do not really want to lose the tooth as I am already missing two bottom molars on that side of my mouth... Not enough bone in that area for an implant... I have lousy bone in my jaw.... Guess I will go for a walk.... Thanks for listening to my rant.
Waaaaa

@SeaMaiden Sorry to hear this. I hate the dentist. I just want to go for my cleaning and not hear about anything else. I recently chose to have a back tooth removed. They wanted me to go here and there and have this specialist and that and scrape and cut , no way. I am not that girl! They told me it was probably infected and some bone loss and that it could spread to the rest. Mine grew in sort of overlapped when I was a kid, now the gum started pulling away. I just chose to have them remove it. I do still have a wisdom tooth in there. What ever you decide for you , I wish you well.

Arggghhh. Dental issues are so annoying. I'm sorry @SeaMaiden . Can you get another opinion? Ask them if you were their Sister, what would you recommend? They really should give a recommendation! Keep us posted and hope it smooths out-

@SeaMaiden - I hate the dentist. I've had more work done than I care to think about. Just writing to let you know I'm thinking of you, commiserating with you and fingers crossed that your tooth settles down soon💗💗💗💗💗

@SeaMaiden Sorry to hear you are having this dilemma. If it were me I would most likely go with the root canal. Of course working in that field most of my adult life has an effect on my opinion. I know you don't need opinions but if you have the tooth treated you may still get several more years out of it. If they think it may eventually need to be extracted, then it is what it is. It is expensive to replace teeth too and like you said with the bone not being the best your options are quite limited. I wish you the best and hope you feel better soon.

@SeaMaiden I also hate going to the dentist. My question is why didn't the dentist see the issue when you got the crown. I had two crowns done in the past two months and my dentist always does an xray before he does the work.
Both crowns were replacements of ones that I had done years ago. The one had decay under the crown and my dentist gave me an antibotic after the work. He wanted to make sure that there was no infection.

I've never had a crown or anything like that. I've only had a few teeth filled. I went to the dentist last year for a tooth that was bothering me. Fortunately, it just need a little filling. However, my mother said that if they suggest a crown or root canel, absolutely say no. She said it's better to pull the tooth than to get a crown. They just cause trouble down the road. From what I hear from other people, my mother is right. I would hate to lose a tooth, but if it's gone, it'll never bother you again. Might have to get dentures or a partial, but it's better than throwing away good money after bad and STILL having troubles with the tooth. Just my two cents...
