They tape the injured toe to another to stabilize, but check with MD to make sure nothing else is going on-

the toe is connected to the rest of your body....

Once you've ruled out anything serious I'd feel free to treat it myself

Feel better soon.

@Mom2Dogs  If the bruising is going away and is getting better, I personally would not go to the doctor.  If it is interfering with daily life, maybe you should go.

I stubbed my big toe a few months ago, ending up losing the nail, and it hurt for quite a while.

I soaked it in epsom salt the first couple weeks and also took:

They helped alot.  If you aren't familiar with these, just Google them.  They are cheap and a Godsend to have on hand.

All the best.  It is not a small injury.

Ouch!! About 6 weeks ago I walked into the door jam in my bare feet and stubbed my baby toe....the entire top of my foot turned black and blue was the toe was very tender.   I assumed it would heal and the pain would go away....it is still quite tender.

I know it's a little injury but I am having trouble wearing some of my shoes...I can'e wear flip flops and open shoe this winter....

I really hate to go to the doctor it's seems like a silly injury but 6 weeks seems like a long time to heal...any advice?

I am icing it again today........

A family member did the same, except it was his middle toe.   He did like you.   He's diabetic and at an unrelated doctors visit it was determined he had an infection in the break.   The toe had to come off.

it may turn out nothing can be done, but get it x-rayed.   If he had, they would have seen it was a vertical break, down the bone.   Being diabetic it never healed properly and infection set in.   I can't believe you've suffered with this for 6 weeks!

@tends2dogs....bruising has been gone for several weeks, but the toe is still 'touchy' and shoes long term (as in all day) is painful.....going to the doctor when it happened never occured to me!

I will soak and tape for another week or so ( and look up the pills you took)....and then I will re-evaluate what to do.

Thanks everyone!

I've never injured my toe, but I did injure my tail bone once.

I was in my 20's, and on a damp day, I decided to go to the beach.

I was wearing hiking boots, and for a reason that I can't remember, I decided to walk across a wet log.

In the blink of an eye, I went from standing on the log, to straddling it.

I did not feel myself falling.

At the time, I didn't feel any pain, but boy did I a week later!

I did not go to the doctor, because it's not like they could put a cast or sling on it.

It eventually healed on its own.

I dropped a can on my big toe and did damage to the nail down by the nail bed, it took a whole year for the damage to grow out.

As someone who has broken a toe four times, now, I agree with what others have posted.  My biggest mistake for the last broken toe was not going to the podiatrist to have it properly taped when I knew it was broken. Sometimes bones can heal crookedly if they are not optimally taped while they heal over the eight weeks it takes for them to mend.  I know when I break a toe, simply due to the level of pain that results from that type of injury.  I learned the hard way what happens when you run barefoot in the grass as a child and happen to have a middle toe that is longer than your other toes, and what happens when you are pregnant and cannot see your feet any longer while walking around barefoot, and what happens when you are wrestling with your dog to remove something from his mouth and a door jamb happens to be in the way of your bare feet, and what happens when you are racing to turn off the sprinkler system in your garage for the people mowing your lawn, and you don't put on your shoes properly, so you trip over the steps, fly into the air, and fall onto your concrete foundation.

Good luck with your foot! If it hurts for that long, it is most likely broken somewhere, even if it is a hairline fracture.  It is time to get to a doctor.

@Mom2Dogs

I do know how painful a broken toe can be.  If after 6 weeks your pain has not subsided, you need to see an orthopedist.  Breaks may heal on their own but it could be ligament, tendon or muscle damage. Broken toes are often taped but not always.

@lulu2, and others.  I did tape the toe after it was mentioned to do so....today for the first time since middle july I got on a pair of closed toe shoes and so far not much pain in the pinky toe, thank goodness.

This toe has been injured/or broken 2x before, I am not a klutz...first two times I walked into a large landscape stone in our front yard, two different times!

This last time, I hit my foot/toe on the door jam....

Next time I will go to the doctor right away.
