The men were all dosing off during the video. My problem was difficulty falling asleep and sleeping through the night. Once they hooked me up, I had great difficulty falling asleep and I had to take a xanax to complete the study. They diagnosed me with periodic limb movement and my neurologist was able to prescribe an appropriate medication. A sleep study can definitely diagnose disorders other than sleep apnea. I think it's important to have the right doctor interpreting the results and treating you. In my experience, only a neurologist has helped me.
Thank you, adelle, that's good to know that they look at something other than sleep apnea.

I take a lot of things said on these medical boards with a grain of salt. For instance, just because a person has sleep apnea and doesn't use the CPAP machine does not mean they willdevelop pulmonary hypertension. That may be a possibility, but a blanket statement like that is wrong... and it can scare people. Neither does it necessarily affect everyone's kidneys. These are possibilities, not absolutes.
My brother has sleep apnea and tried the CPAP machine many years ago. He couldn't use it and never has tried it again. He had a heart attack at age 60 and had quadruple bypass surgery, was diagnosed with sleep apnea, he's now almost 78 and healthy as can be, does his own yard work for his primary residence and a lake house, with no problems.
I was diagnosed several years ago with sleep apnea/hypopnea. Apnea is when you stop breathing many times during the night. Hypopnea is when you wake many times during the night struggling for breath, you don't completely stop breathing. You're not aware that you're waking or that you stop breathing, but it keeps you from getting to the most restful state of sleep, which is why people with this condition are so sleepy and tired during the day even though they think they slept all night.
My diagnosis was mostly hypopnea, but mainly if I'm on my back. I tried the CPAP but I couldn't use it, so I put a pillow at my back to keep me from turning over while I'm asleep. I think it works for the most part. My doctor said some people sometimes take a t-shirt and sew a tennis ball in the pocket, then wear it backwards to sleep. If they try to turn over and lie on their back, the tennis ball won't let them! And I haven't developed pulmonary hypertension, and I have no problems with my kidneys that I'm aware of.
I hope you and your husband will talk to your doctor so you can find out who has the main problem and can take care of it.
kitty, that's awesome about your brother!
You are correct, we should take the medical advice here with a grain of salt. People find something on Google and usually don't know the full scope of what they are reading.
Happy Housewife was a professional nurse, so I trust what she says is based on her experience and not her ability to use Google.

I had a Sleep Study done 3 1/2 years ago and I am glad that I did. I have Mild to Moderate Sleep Apnea and now I use a CPAP. I use my CPAP every night and sleep very well with it. The study itself was on 2 separate nights. The first time without the machine (they made the diagnosis) and the second night with the machine where they adjusted it to my needs. I had no problem doing the studies. They do attach a lot of wires to your head and there is no TV or electronics allowed so it is basically, you lay down and sleep. I think the bedtime was around 9 PM and they got me up fairly early 6:30 or so. My brother said he had trouble sleeping with that camera on him but I did not. My brother has severe Sleep Apnea and wears a Bipap. I love my CPAP machine and feel very rested now.

There are different types of masks. I use Nasal Pillows. One poster mentioned the mask that goes over the Ears. I have one of those, the masks loops over the Ears instead of over and around the Head. I wore the Ear holders for a few nights and they bothered my Ears. Everyone is different.

I was tempted to schedule one, but I believe my sleep issues are hormone related. I can't understand how 1) being in an unusual bed, 2) connected with tons of wires, 3) just not being in your own environment, will provide any information. If I don't sleep well in my own home, a clinic would be the last place I could sleep.
Shouldn't it be called a "No Sleep Study"?! ![]()

Thought the same thing too, but after having one done, they did get valuable information. The bed just a simple hospital bed and the pillow had one of those crinkly protectors on it. Eventually you do fall asleep and they are able to capture the data they need.

AuntG, thank you for this info. I thought the same thing that sids did (not the last line though).
