Hi,
I went to my hair stylist on August 4 and went shopping afterwards. Didn't over do it as to walking around for hours. The next day coudn't walk and was experencing a very intense sharp pain on the right outeside of my left foot. Pain worse barely make the stairs and stand on it. On Wednesday last week I went to Urgent Care. Saw a Pa on duty who looked at it and sent me over to get some x-rays. She couldn't see anything very wrong and said that sometimes a stress fracture doesn't show up on x-rays alone. An MRI could determine the cause much better. Was sent home with a post-op shoe to use for walking. Then if that didn't work out to try a Cam boot. I called to pick-up the boot but I was told that I would need a RX from a doctor. Now the pain is so awful and I am so upset and don't know what is going on with that foot. I did not have a fall down injury like years ago. I am very puzzled on how something could come on so sudden witout an injury. Have to call my doctor and pray they will get me in this week because my body is weakened with pain in my left foot for now 9 days. If anybody had something similar to what I am going through I would appreciate your output so very much. Also, have tried elevating the foot and ice but doesn't help!
Thanks,
Linda S.

Are you taking Tylenol or Aspirin, that might help. Soft tissue damage can be pretty painful and if your foot is swollen it might be squeezing nerves. I would continue to ice and elevate the foot and take something for pain till you can see your doctor. If you really think it's more than that or can't stand the pain I would go to the ER.

@Pasta LoverSkip your doctor. Go to a Podiatrist.
Post haste.

Likely plantar fasciitis, which won't show on x-rays. The ligament might be inflammed.
Ice and ibuprophren will help. But you need a podiatrist, not an M.D.

Typical plantar fasciitis pain is localized directly to the heel, sometimes the arch. I also wouldn't describe it as sharp or intense unless the fascia or ligaments were severely injured, which isn't common. I have had extremely severe and long-lasting PF and while I didn't know what it was as it was getting worse, it was a gradual process, not overnight or instantaneous.
It's difficult to interpret someone else's description of their pain. Someone might describe pain as unbearable that I would take ibuprofen for and be fine with. There are also people that would have a very high threshold for pain, where they would be low-key about something that would kill me.
The only thing you can do for the time being is to stay off the foot, take mega-doses of anti-inflammatories, and periodically ice the area.
It is true that hairline fractures of many areas of the body may not show up initially on an x-ray.
I would go to a podiatrist only after an orthopedist (MD) has told you definitively that they can find nothing wrong on x-ray, CT or MRI. Podiatrists can be surgery-happy, and podiatric surgery recovery is often like back surgery - long, painful, and was it really worth it.

@Pasta Lover For temporary relief of pain, I use SportsGel, I buy this at Vitacost, slather all over the painful area. I once had sprained ankle, pain so severe I couldn;'t sleep, so it dawned on me to try SportsGel, which I use for back pain, etc. and it worked well enough to enable me to sleep.
I hope your medical appointment will resolve the issue and put you on the right track for recovery.

In 2011 I sustained a stress fracture in my right foot from wearing a toe thong sandal for a 3 hour errand run. At the time I had no idea the sandals were the cause.
The pain in my foot was intense enough to bring tears, and only time made it better. I did use a heat producing rub, took ibuprofen, and wore shoes with more support, during the weeks the pain was most intense. The toe thong sandals went out in the trash.
6 years later, the foot still gives me reminders that it cannot tolerate intense walking activity, and I am challenged to find shoes that work well for me. In the last year after finding out my right knee is ready for joint replacement, I have had more issues with my foot, than with my knee. My doctor says the inflammation from advancing osteoarthritis is behind the latest issues with my foot, and I should see an improvement after I have surgery.

Many things it could be, I won't speculate by listing them all. Any injury from the ankle bone down to the bottom of a foot, falls into the field of a Podiatrists(foot specialist MD Doctor), that is who I see with foot issues.
My suggestion would be to set up an appointment with one in your area. One thing I will say is this. I have had several bouts with Plantar Fasciitis, on both feet, once on both at the same time. Many here have also experienced this painful condition. If you curl your your toes upward towards your knee, and the pain intensifies?
