Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS FOR POSSIBLE UTI

@ThinkingOutLoud

Please explain "do not keep around electronics?" I don't understand what you are meaning here?

@pdlinda

I have taken antibiotics many times, not real often for UTI, but lots of sinus issues in the past.

A helpful treatment might be boric acid suppositories...these help women who suffer from bacterial vaginitis. I have used these in the past as an extra supplement to the prescribed antibiotic to help heal the UTI. You might ask your doctor about boric acid suppositories?

Good luck with whatever you choose for this issue!

@OneHappyHiker   Very interesting post!  I will print out to study in detail.  My labs revealed that my kidneys and liver are in great shape and I'd like to keep them that way!  Thanks very much for sharing your experience with me.

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS FOR POSSIBLE UTI

[ Edited ]

I am prone to UTI's for some reason. My mom was too. I did some research and started taking Semain daily, and boy has that ever helped. You can find out about it on their website. There are tons of great reviews and you take one pill daily for maintenace and twice daily if you feel UTI symptoms coming on for a few days...

It has really helped me a lot.  Before this, I was doing the Mannose which did help as well, but was kind of hard on my stomach, and I also did the cranberry juice, and the cranberry pills which had very little effect on me....

This was the 1st thing that really helped me....Semainehealth. I also limit my coffee intake every day, and no more soda...It is a known irritant, besides too much sugar.....

@HerRoyaLioness wrote:

If your UA showed something, they will usually do a urine culture and if that grows anything, you would need antibiotics to treat it.
The type of antibiotic would depend on what the culture grew out.
You need to ask your dr if they did a culture and what it showed

@HerRoyaLioness,

@pdlinda,

Yes, this is exactly what I was trying to say so thank you!

And I learned years ago that a UTI is particularly dangerous for the elderly becuase it can quickly travel to the kidneys and bloodstream, causing blood poisoning and sepsis. Also a kind of dementia. It is important to think of uti's if an elderly person starts acting eratic or not themselves at all.

This happened to my step mother. Very scary so nothing to full around with.

And yes to the urine culture is what is needed.

So much good info. I'm getting out my D-Mannose now too!

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS FOR POSSIBLE UTI

I think a lot of times with the elderly, it is compounded by the fact that they sit all the time.  The bladder never fully empties.

If I sit a lot, besides sciatica, I'll often get that uncomfortable sorta need to go feeling, but it goes away as soon as I become more active.

@Icegoddess   Thanks for that info.  I NEVER SIT for more than 15 mins.  I made a New Year's resolution to try and not run around as much as I do and try to relax more.  On that basis alone, I don't qualify for having a UTI, but we'll see.Smiley Wink

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS FOR POSSIBLE UTI

@Icegoddess  Good points. I learned many years ago not to sit for too long and not to wait until my bladder was uncomfortable to empty it.

Waiting too long can cause problems. Another reason to drink plenty of water. Not gallons but a good amount and to use the bathroom before it "hurts".

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS FOR POSSIBLE UTI

Just for the record, you have to take antibiotics to thoroughly kill bacteria; nothing else can kill bacteria.  Some home remedies keep a bacteria active at a very low function which is  course, unhealthy. People think they were successful until a major event occurs.
