Reaction to Canual Epidural Injection

Has any body experienced an unusual reaction to a steriod epidural injection? I had a canal epidural injection for bulging discs and tailbone on Wednesday. I didn't make this decision lightly and put it off for a long time. I have felt off ever since. I didn't sleep for two days, weight gain, and more burning pain at base of spine. Today is 4 th day since procedure and still experiencing pain at injection site. I feel more like myself today but this is not what I was expecting. No reduction in burning pain at base of spine and having to take more medication. I have called pain management numerous times and told to see primary care doctor. I feel like I have been hit by a truck. I was told weight gain, not sleeping, and feeling off was not a side effect of injection. I am to continue with pain meds and see NP in two weeks. I am terrified I have done more harm than good to my back. I know it takes time for the steriods to work. I think I am sensitive to steriods. If I don't see results, NP will probably recommend another injection. I did this procedure to have more of a normal social life. I can't sit for more than 30 minutes. This is day 4 and I have not resumed normal activities. I was assured that I would be fine the day after procedure. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Your experience is not out of the ordinary.  I have been requiring steroids for MS, bulging disks, optic neuritis, trigeminal neuralgia and asthma for years and yes, they will keep you awake and cause you to gain weight among other things.  I get huge loads in the hospital and I have gone into congestive heart failure a couple weeks later, but that was from a huge, huge dose (as my opthalmologist put it, a load big enough for an elephant).

Re: Reaction to Canual Epidural Injection

@texassunflower.  I've had tons of steroid injections in the lower back, trying to get some pain relief and never had any kind of reaction.  Pain from the injection is usually gone in 2 days.  In your case, I'd be really POed over the attitude of your doctor.  Apparently he wants to inject then wash his hands of you.  I wouldn't go back to him.

Re: Reaction to Canual Epidural Injection

About a month ago I had a Lumbar Radiofrequency Ablation on my lower right back.  The pain seems to have worsened rather than abated.  I go back next week for consultation with the Doctor at the pain center.  I am extremely disappointed in the results of a less than pleasant experience and treatment.  Hopefully I can find some answers before the left side is done.

Re: Reaction to Canual Epidural Injection

@texassunflowerI'm so sorry you're enduring this.  I had a lot of pain after two lumbar epidurals, even though the neurosurgeon told me I'd be "thanking" him for the immediate relief he'd assured me I'd feel.  So some post-epidural pain is to be expected.  But you should not have to put up with incapacity until you see the NP in 2 weeks.  While I'd think it's extremely unlikely that the shot has damaged you, please do call pain management and continue with your pain meds as you were instructed.  And take a deep breath, because you're probably on your way to recovery, although it doesn't feel like it now.

I've had more steroid injections to my knees and back then I can count and weight gain is not one of the things to expect with that type of sterioid.  It's not the body builder type of steroid.    You should do what the pain specialist told you, if you are still have pain that you think is related to the injection, see your Pcp.  Same thing with what  that "slightly off"  or not well feeling, that doen't sound like it's related to the injections.  See your PCP, that was good advice and it's all they could tell you.

I hate to disagree with you but any steroid can cause some people to gain weight.  I have had more steroids than most people could even live through.  I got steroids in grams, intrathecally and I have gotten them into my knees, and as IM injections.  I do know a little bit about what I am talking about.

From a medical journal:

According to research published in International Journal of Medical Sciences, about 40 millionTrusted Source steroid prescriptions are written each year in the United States. Commonly prescribed steroids include:

These drugs are highly effective at reducing inflammation, but they also have some troubling side effects. One of these is weight gain. Read on to learn why this is the case and what you can do.
