Re: Question about colonoscopies

The docs at my gastro practice REQUIRE someone to bring you and pick you up. They don't allow you to leave on your own.

Re: Question about colonoscopies

My practice makes it clear in the upfront instructions you are given that a responsible party must drive you. One of the first things they ask when you arrive for the procedure is who will be driving you home. They allow no ubers, taxis, buses, etc. They accompany you out of the facility and make sure of such.

Re: Question about colonoscopies

[ Edited ]

I've always had to have someone come and get me.  The nurse calls  them, and then she walked me out to make sure there was indeed someone there for me and she said hello and handed me off. lol.

I must say it's only a twilight sleep and I  could have easily driven myself home.  Always went out for breakfast after too.

As someone before me stated it's a legal thing.

Re: Question about colonoscopies

Most people need someone to drive them home, because the medication used for the proceedure can effect  everyone differently.

They will not allow the procedure to start unless they know you have a driver waiting for you to take you home.  You are not allowed to take an Uber or other forms of transportation home.

My Dr. wouldn't even perform the procedure unless they knew you had a driver there to take you home.

Re: Question about colonoscopies

I just had one.  I had to sign a paper that assured them I was being picked up after the procedure.  Then they went to the waiting room and got that person for me.  A doctor is risking liability by letting someone drive themselves home.  I can't comment about public transportation.  I'm sure there are doctors who don't check and yes, people who drive themselves home.  They are putting themselves and others at risk.  I sure wouldn't want to be on the road with someone who had just been under anesthesia, even if it was for just a short time. NOPE.  It's wrong and anyone who is doing it is selfish.

Re: Question about colonoscopies

We have always been told we'd need a driver so we'd have to schedule our appointments on separate days.

I offered to pick up a friend after a colonoscopy.  He called me right after he said he finished and told me I didn't have to go get him because the doctor told him he could return by himself in the bus (public transportation - he rides all the time).  It's about a 30 mins. ride and some walking involved.

I don't think he had a colonoscoy and that is why he didn't need anyone to get him.

Do you know of anyone who has been allowed to return from a colonoscopy like that?  Late 60s, very mobile, no cancer history.

TIA!

@NYCLatinaMe

I have a son who drove himself to his colonoscopy, got the procedure and then drove himself to eat breakfast and on to work (profession).  His wife expected him to call her to pick him up but he didn't and he called her when he made it to the office and told her the results of the procedure.  My grandfather used to ride 50 miles to and from cancer therapy on a Greyhound bus and had to walk a mile to the bus station from the cancer center and had to walk a mile home after he got off the bus.  I don't know that I could do that.  Once he returned home septic from the treatment and almost died but he went back the next month.  He lived to be 96 years old.  So, I guess we all have different tolerances, some better than others.

Sorry, but your son's actions were wrong.  He may have felt fine, but he still was under, howerver short, so he should not have been driving for his and others' safety. And I question his doctor and the staff.  I see you are most likely in NY (me too) and I have never worked with a doctor who let me or any of my relatives or friends drive themselves home after the procedure.  My doctor's staff is strict.  You don't get out of the office until they bring the person to get you.  I received paperwork ahead of time that indicated such and was given more to sign when I arrived for the procedure.  What doctor would risk his career by letting someone drive him- or herself home from this type of procedure?  SMH.
