I am looking to purchase this for my DH and DD.  Oregon Grape keeps coming up.  Is it the same thing?  I think I understand that berberine is in oregon grape, but is that the only and best source?

@SilleeMee Can you guide me to a brand or source that you recommend?

TIA

Yes. Oregon grape is also called barberry where the root of the plant is used to extract berberine.

I suggest looking for 500mg caps with no fillers added (cinnamon mostly). You can start looking on Amazon for 'berberine no fillers'. From there you can find a variety of them. For myself I have been taking PipingRock's berberine but I'm looking to change to a filler-free supp. Not sure which one though.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT BERBERINE

[ Edited ]

Oregon grape (barberry or scientific name Berberis) is not the only source for berberine. One other popular source is from the goldenseal plant (scientific name Hydrastis). Both species of plants have roots which can be used to extract the medicinal berberine.  It's the root of the plant that contains the most berberine. Stems/bark contain some and the berries and leaves contain very little.

Just to be clear...

Berberine is a substance which comes out of a plant. Berberine supps don't contain plant parts but the supps contain extracted berberine from the plant parts, roots in this case, whichever those plants might be (Oregon grape, goldenseal or other). It's not like you are eating plant roots when you take a berberine supp. You're ingesting an extracted substance from the roots which is a pure and concentrated form of the active ingredient berberine.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT BERBERINE

@tends2dogs

AL's berberine is 250mg caps. Dosage should be around 1000 to 1500mg per day (divided into two or three doses, 500mg per meal). Do the math.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT BERBERINE

@SilleeMee   I see that Andrew Lessman's has magnesium oxide and vitamin c added.  His comes from the barberry bark.

Is this what you meant about no additives?

Re: QUESTION ABOUT BERBERINE

@SilleeMee  I found a PURE ORIGINALS brand on A.  1440 mg. for 3 capsules.  From the root and has no fillers - lab tested.  It is 12.99 for 100 caps so about a one month supply.

Lessman is $21 for 60 and $55 for 180, but his has the magnesium and vitamin c.

The Amazon one looks like a much better price. Woman Wink

@tends2dogs

Yes. Some additives are beneficial. Small amounts of vitamin C are often added to enhance absorption. The magnesium in AL's could have an effect on glucose management. Neither are necessary but are there as added benefits you might find in other supps you take.
