What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?

I guess a crown is when the tooth is ground down to a nub and a cap--sort of like a hollow tooth is glued onto the nub.
A veneer involves preparing the tooth surface to accept a glued on thin topper that covers discolorations or covers over a chipped tooth. I have read that most people do only 4 or 6 top teeth and the same for the bottom. Seems like the very not treated would still be seen?

My sister has veneers, and you are correct @granddi (at least in my sister's case)....she had only the front, bottom and top, teeth done. So her smile is very nice, but when she belly-laughs, the mouth is wide open and you can tell very easily the difference next to the other teeth.
