Hats off to you, @hoosieroriginal!  I hope some of that rubs off on me.  My friend and I started walking, not very far, last fall, as rehab for her following her second hip replacement.  A month ago we joined the local health club.  I really wanted more aerobics but every time I get on the treadmill I end up with a painful Achilles tendon.  I ended up moving to the Schwinn AirDyne bike and am up to 3 miles.  That might not sound like much but for me it is.  After we're done on the bikes we go to the weight machines.  I sure feel like I'm doing something when I'm there, but anxious to see the visible change.

@JeanLouiseFinch - be patient -- it takes awhile to see a difference but all in all it is really good for your health!

@hoosieroriginal, Excellent! I'm very happy for you! A lot of people get frustrated too soon if they don't see results by the week or even day.... which is why I rarely get on a scale and just go by how my clothes fit to know I'm where I should be.

@JeanLouiseFinch, I also had a problem with my Achilles on the treadmill. I learned that a treadmill in its base position is never completely flat even though it may appear to be flat -- there is always a slight incline at the front, so even an inch or two of incline causes your ankles to be slightly flexed with every step; thus, the strain on the Achilles. Also, walking on a moving belt is very different from walking outside in terms of how the muscles and tendons are affected. If the weather allows you to get outside, that's the way to go. :-)
