I haven't had a partial knee replacement but I  am very familiar with them on patients of all ages with osteoarthritis or knee injuries.  They only replace the part of the knee cartilage  that is damaged so there's little to no post op pain and recovery is much quicker than it would be for total knee replacement.

Hckynut gave me the word I needed to make my post - patella.  That is the knee cap, you know, that round thing on the point.  I was told a partial knee replacement saved the patella.  For whatever reason I couldn't fathom, so I said let's go with the total.  I've also had a friend who had extensive arthroscopic surgery  (I saw the x ray) and he wished he'd gone ahead and done the knee.  That's because his hip replacement was easier than the knee surgery and eventually he will have to have it done anyway.  I'm just glad mine is over, I went through a broken ankle easier than the knee replacement, pain wise.
