Meniscus operation question

I have written before that my son was having one. He had been going for therapy. His leg was hurting below the operation. The doctor found out there was fluid there and gave him a shot. He forgot to ask why was there fluid built up but will next time he sees the doc. Just wondering ahead of time if any one knows the answer to the fluid question. Thank you.
