Medical Bills/Errors

[ Edited ]

The billing dept for my doctor's appt's keep coming up with credits but cannot explain where it came from???  Doctor's office now shows a credit over $60. I also have credit from the hospital. I have never over paid any of my bills. I pay all my medical bills from what my EOB says. It used to always match the statements I received. My ultrasound EOB shows I owe $106.09. The statement from the hospital shows I already paid $32.43 so I owe $73.66. I never paid the $32.43 they said I paid. I called the # on the statement & told me I paid that the day of service. I did not pay anything the day of service. Next she calls me back & tells me well sometimes Ins pays the claim & then they come back & pay some more. LOL!!! I never heard of such a thing. I think once they pay the claim & send you an EOB that's it unless you dispute it.

Anyways I don't know where the credits are coming from so I'm just paying the $106.09 since that's what the EOB says is my part & nobody can tell me where all the credits are coming from.

I already sent them a letter & a check back about another bill & never heard anything back on it. It was also about a collections notice they sent me which was paid upon receipt of statement. I have no idea where they posted that payment. I guess it never went to collections because I never heard anything. I will be ticked if it does. We have paid all ours bills on time never a late payment & have excellent credit. It ticked me off just receiving the notice which stated final notice & was the only notice we received about it.

How do you keep track of paying medical bills?

Seems to me if I pay the amount on my EOB's I should owe nothing + not have any credits.

Sorry so long I just needed to rant. LOL!!!

All my Dr's belong to the same hospital.  So when I see Dr 1, I pay my copay on the day off the appt.  Dr 2 and Dr 3 get paid their copays too.  Then somewhere along the line, I get say a scan.  That's when things go crazy.  I get billed for copays, even though I paid them.  The payments get applied to the scan.  I feel your pain.

I feel your pain .... the EOB's usually confuse the hell out of me .. then when I call for an explanation the person giving the explanation can't really explain it!!!!! ..... it is really frustrating to say the least!!!!

@GCR18 Well I don't have a co-pay for appts. I have to pay my $250 deductible before that amount for the appt goes to 0. My 1st appt was around $98, next around $12 & next around $7. I think I have met my deductible so if I go back this year it's free. The hospital always tries to get you to pay some when you come in. I have never paid anything & always paid after I received my statements & EOB's. I don't pay anything when I see the doctor either until I receive the info since as you can see above the amount I pay to see the doctor is always different. I have no idea how much until I receive my EOB.

@January121 I don't have any problems with the EOB. It always shows how much was charged, how much is allowed by Ins, how much was paid by Ins & how much the patient owes.

It's the refund checks they send me or the credits on my account they have or credit they put as partial payment on a bill I have which I never made a partial payment. There are 2 people here in town with the same name. I'm sure there are many out there with my name since it's a common last name.

Never pay for a medical based on the EOB. Just wait until you are billed from the provider. If you have question, call the providers office directly. I was a medical claims processor for 10 years. They will let you know what you currently own. Most providers are pretty lienent even if you are a little late. So frustrating I know.

@luvdoodles My EOB's have always matched my statements until last year when my account got all messed up. Now they keep coming up with credits + sent me a check. I mailed the check back & have not used any of the credits. I feel if I don't pay what Ins shows is my part eventually they will send me a notice for unpaid bills that they will not be able to explain what's it's for.

Since you were a medical claims processor does Ins pay more once they have paid a claim? That's what I was told why I have credit. I was told sometimes the Ins sends more money. LOL!!! That's just an excuse since they cannot explain where the credits come from. I have never had Ins pay more on a claim once it was paid.

I'm not able to explain why the credits, but I don't pay based on the EOB's.  I wait for bills from the providers.

I get frustrated only when I seem to owe more than I thought I would.  Then the calls begin;  I start with my Medicare back-up company because I pretty much always get a real "voice" who can explain the bill or make tht bill go away.

Last year the hospital I was in sent me a bill saying I owed $2,300 and change.  I called to see why such a large amount.  Talked to a lady in the billing dept and she said it had been taken care of!  Boy, I was one happy camper.

It's complicated and there's no easy "one size fits all answer" but sometimes the insurer under pays or over pays and adjusts the payment and that can result in a credit for the patient.  Sometimes the doctor or hospital submits a late charge and that can result in a credit.   You can try calling the doctor's office and ask to speak to the billing manager.  For the hospital, you would call the billing office or Patient Finance and ask for an explanation.
