@Mom2Dogs wrote:@Gooday....when my health insurance went to $800.00/month I had to do something. I ended up with Christian Health Care Ministry...they do not call it insurance...there are some hoops to jump thru, like any pre existing condition is not covered for 3 years....no wellness visits are covered, etc.
You do have to make a statement of faith but that was not an issue for me.
You say you are 64, so if you would take out one of their plans you would only be on it for a year, you might look into it, but understand what it is before you sign on the dotted line so to speak.
I also received a roughly $50.00 discount because I am in good health. My premium is now around $303.00 month with a $3600.00 deductible. The deductible has to be paid before they pay out anything. Exact numbers are on the web site. It was/is worth it to me to go that route, others might disagree but there was no way we could pay $800.00/month. The insurance was very good but I rarely used it.
Last year I heard an advertisement on the radio for this. Unfortunately, you are part of a "pool" and if you are relatively healthy, it's not so bad. Have a debilitating disease and it can be disastrous.
For me, I am biting the bullet for another year. As for DH, some may think that $292.00 for his Aetna Advantage plan is a high premium but it's quite manageable for us and it has been a God-send. Last year we were paying $1200. a month because our insurance was through the City of Chicago Retiree Plan which kept raising the BC/BS rates for the non-medicare retirees. It was MY premiums causing the increase. Finally, our illustrious mayor, said that as of 1/17 they were done paying our premiums and those were our options.
I am happy to say we are leaving Illinois and this city at the end of the month.

@Carmie wrote:@Gooday Wow, that is a hefty fee for insurance at over $400 a month. I am happy that is it working out for him though.
It sounds like a lot and I understand that for some it may be. We are fortunate and blessed that DH has a good pension and I took my SS at 62 and just for that reason. We have no bills so....
Again, it has been terrific for DH considering his medical history and all the drugs he takes. I will sign up for his plan next year before I turn 65 in August, I never thought I would say I'd never be so anxious to turn 65!
