Think parents quit getting the kids vaccinated for fear of another problem. We used to HAVE to get them vaccinated before the kids could even go to school. I guess now they don't have to. So, outbreak.

The "Jenny McCarthy Theory" has been disproved over and over so parents need to stop using that for a reason not to get their kids vaccinated. This is the result of all of that. All you have to do is sign a waiver now when you enter school. I have a daycare business and that was what I had to do and I hated it. Over 30 years, I've only had 2 kids like that but , fortunately I didn't have any infants at the time and both of those kids didn't stay long in my daycare. Now, I'm not throwing darts at everyone, but both sets of parents were some of the flakiest people I'd ever come across and not just because of not vaccinating their kids.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

The Mayo clinic website says if you had the measles you do not need to get the vaccine as you are immune. Most people born before 1957 actually had the measles which is why articles are saying if born before then you don't need to get the vaccine. According to that site, if you were already "fully" vaccinated you do not need to get any additional vaccine. Fully means that you had two doses of the vaccine.

I've recently had a booster because testing during pregnancy showed I wasn't immune. I was born in 1973. If it has been a long time since you had an MMR, it is not a bad idea to get a booster. They can also run titers to see if you are immune if you want to go through the trouble. Personally, I'd save the money and just take the shot.

Edited to say: ESPECIALLY if you live in a state that allows vaccine exceptions, notably one that is having an outbreak.

I too had a booster in between pregnancies because I wasnt immune. My son had his titers checked a few years ago because the clinic lost his immunization records and he needed proof of vaccinations. He was born in 1988, had had all the required vaccinations as a child. He virtually had no immunities and had to be revaccinated. The vaccinations do not last a lifetime.

The rate of those who have gotten the measles who were not vaccinated is 82%. Of course we all know that you can go to your primary care and get the shot but do you need another one? That is my question.

If it has been a long time, you can have titers run to test your immunity. It costs money just like the shot. There is no harm in a booster. fwiw

If you have insurance, the shot is free. It's part of preventative medicine.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

Talk to your doctor about whether or not you may need a booster shot. While you're at it, ask about getting a Tdap vaccine booster for pertussis, diphtheria, and tetanus. Pertussis (whooping cough) has been spreading and is currently more common in America than the measles.

Lots of diseases preventable by vaccines are making a comeback. Here's an interactive map that includes the 2015 measles outbreak, but you can see that whooping cough is still wider spread. 2014 saw over 13,00 cases of whooping cough in 2014 and fewer than 1,000 cases of measles.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

I had measles as a baby, when I was too young for a vaccination. I had rubella when I was ten. I've never had mumps. I got an MMR booster in 2004 (because I couldn't pass my immigration medical without it).

I went for a tetanus booster 18 months ago, and it came bundled with pertussis and diphtheria.

I got a shingles shot last year.

I'm about as immune/vaccinated as I could be. I'm happy to collect vaccinations. People who like to collect diseases are not doing themselves or anyone else any favors.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

I think it's utterly crazy that todays parents don't vaccinate their children. I have a younger friend that is a teacher. She doesn't vaccinate her kids because her parents never had her vaccinated. I asked her how her children are able to attend school and she gave me a wave of her hand and said that she can just "write them off". You'd think a teacher would be more intelligent. I've always thought her decision was nuts, now I see most agree with me.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

We know a family with 5 kids where the 2nd oldest became Autistic. They did not get any of their younger 3 vaccinated. If someone honestly thinks that the shots could cause autism, I can understand trying to protect the rest of your children and taking their chances by avoiding the shots.

Re: Measles making a comeback?

This makes me so angry! There are 72 children down with measles and all because of idiotic parents who won't vaccinate their kids.

The majority of those kids were unvaccinated, but even vaccinated kids can possibly get it if they're in close contact with the others.

Measles can kill and can cause encephalitis.
