Everyone should have a ham sandwich, a marshmallow peep, and a nap!

My mother is almost 93 and has real problems keeping her BP under control. She wound up in the ER when it got really high. After spending almost two weeks with her, we saw her docs and got her meds and her BP straightened out. Then, she recently invited my daughter and granddaughter to lunch, where she made eggplant Parmesan. She made way too much so she ate the leftovers for lunch and dinner for a couple of days in a row. I found this out AFTER she had another BP scare. I thought I'd have to drive the 5 hours to NJ again for another emergency. Fortunately Mom realized that she had consumed WAY too much sodium and gave the rest of the leftovers to her aide. She promised me that she would read labels and give up on the idea that to throw away food is a sin. Her BP calmed down. It really is important not to eat high sodium foods if you have a problem with them...even if they taste good and will go to waste.

Me too. I had never thought of this. Thank goodness we don't have anyone with such profound issues.

Okay! Stop trying to make me laugh....lol Danger, danger ham alert! ER's full of "ham over dosed" patients....omg....that's too funny for words.

Hypertension is a very dangerous disease and the OP was speaking the truth. Just because you have never had an issue with sodium does not mean it is some joke. How insensitive of you.{#emotions_dlg.sad}

I bought an uncured ham for our Easter dinner - supposed to be 30% less sodium - but still tasted pretty salty. I actually prefer pork roasts and will go back to that.

Ham is much leaner than beef and the old scary tales of under cooked pork are no longer very relevant to today's products. Pork tenderloins are one of the main meats I serve. As they say - pork is the other white meat and so delicious and versatile.

WHERE did you get that idea? {#emotions_dlg.confused1}

Trichinosis is the result of eating under cooked pork or game infected with the larvae of a parasitic worm ..... as in PARASITES.

It is still a concern .... that hasn't changed, and I'm not sure why you think it isn't.

There was an ad campaign the past few years about how you don't have to cook pork to death. I never believed it and the rare times I ever eat it, I cook it to well done.

Someone just had to make it political, right?

Michelle O - that terrible "self-appointed food police chief"? Really?

What person with "a lick of common sense" would slam Michelle and Dr. Jill Biden for what they have been doing to promote healthy eating and exercise for children? Not to mention the other work they have done to fight hunger in this country.

There are far too many parents who don't bother or don't know how to teach their children anything about healthy eating... and far too many children who go hungry. Why would anyone lambast those who are at least making an effort to alleviate this horrible problem? {#emotions_dlg.mad}

ETA: OP, I didn't see your post before I submitted mine. Thanks for the reminder... not everyone thinks about what you posted. And if more children (and young people in general) were exposed to what Michelle and Jill are trying to teach, maybe there would be fewer people who need to watch their ham intake when they grow up!{#emotions_dlg.blush}

Wow. Is this reaction really over the OP's comment that she is not "a personal friend of the First Lady"? Calm down.

No, it isn't, and I don't appreciate being told to "calm down". If you had bothered to actually read all of my post, you will see my paragraph where I edited it... I was typing while the OP submitted hers so I did not see it, and I thanked her for her original post. Apparently the post that I was referring to (to which the OP also referred) has been deleted. I should have quoted it. Someone made a very smart @ ss remark about Michelle O being the self-appointed food police chief and trying to tell everyone what they could or couldn't eat. THAT's what made it political... I just wish I had quoted it or remembered who said it. I'm pretty sure I know but I will not accuse someone and take a chance on being wrong. The person has made political statements before where they didn't belong.

So now you can calm down... {#emotions_dlg.glare}

Tinkrbl44, the original post has apparently been deleted now. I should have quoted it. See my post to emerald... it will explain it. {#emotions_dlg.huh}

My cousin had Easter dinner. Two of my relatives have had heart conditions and she wouldn't let them eat the ham - or the cake dessert!

I had no idea that ham could be so harmful for just one meal.

Who made your cousin the Food Police?

She served a main course and dessert and denied them to two guests? Very twisted, indeed.

I completely agree. I would decline future dinner invitations if I were those relatives.

A little off the subject-Diet soda has as much, if not more, sodium than a portion of ham.

The drink Sunny Dee has vegetable oil.

Thank you for the information about the ham.
