I was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve 2 years ago, doctor said it was common with age and checks the progress every year with an echocardiogram, so far no change. Had to laugh when he said if it gets worse we'll just go and replace it with a new one, easy peasy. Ha, easy for him to say lol.

My Mom had this, and she lived to be almost 95 and it was life as usual once diagnosed.

@I am still oxox My son’s heart murmur was discovered through a routine physical when he was in junior high. He was referred to a cardiologist and had all sorts of testing done. He has mitral valve prolapse. He went to a cardiologist to get it checked every year for several years. He has never had any problems with it and has never been on any medication for it. He is now 28 years old with no problems. I hope yours turns out to be as benign.😊

My very 1st Echocardiogram was in the early 1980's. My Cardiologist told me then that I had a slight leak in 1 of my heart valves. He also told me not to be concerned about it and that it was very unlikely to effect my active lifestyle.
My Cardiovascular issues have had absolutely nothing to do with that leaky heart valve.
My most recent Echocardiogram showed that had not changed. However my Left Ventricle's inability to fully function, because of the damage done by my 2 heart attacks! This has lowered my Ejection Fraction number, and thus I am classified as in Congestive Heart Failure.
That is a brief synopsis of my Cardiovascular history. My leaky heart valve had/has zero to do with any of my heart issues.

The heart doctor mentioned I had leaky valves but that it was normal as we aged.
Unless an Echocardiogram is done at a younger age, a leaky valve cannot be attributed directly to ones age. It may have been present when much younger. Are they more common in older ages? Yes, but that does not preclude it from much younger age groups.
Mine was diagnosed when I was 41 years old. At 84 now! Wasn't even close to being old. According to my most recent Echo, last Fall, my leak has not changed enough to merit my Cardiologist's interest in it.

Mine was discovered about a year ago. Nothing was done about it and the doctor said he will keep checking it to make sure it doesn't get worse and as long as I am not having any symptons, too, nothing needs done.

Which heart valve? Much of what you need to do depends on which heart valve and how it is affecting you.
I had a mitral valve prolapse repair in 2017. I waited around, trying to ignore the looming problem until that valve tore. I was in a lot of pain, chest hurt, couldn't sleep for the chest pain. I got in line for heart valve repair surgery and it was tough but it saved my life and now my value is doing great. The mitral valve can sometimes be repaired with a little donut thing they sew onto the valve and the valve eventually grows around it and they are one.
Don't ignore this, don't be like me who waited until I had a huge problem to take it seriously.
