Re: LOOKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EYE DROPS - ESPECIALLY FOR DRY EYES

@tends2dogs : Just my opinion but it would be better for you to ask your doctor because she knows the best product for your eyes.

@SouthernBee She said any OTC was fine as long as it was preservative free.  She also said it was okay to use OTC with the prescription drops, but not at the same time.

Eyes have two kinds of glands which work to help keep the eyes moist. There are (lacrimal) tear glands and then there are (meibomian) oil glands. My problem is that my oil glands (located along the waterline) are not functioning properly and so any tears produced by my tear glands evaporates too fast. The oil helps prevent rapid evaporation so I use an eye drop which contains (mineral) oil and that helps me a lot.

@SilleeMee Are these drops for night time use?  I ask because I wondered if the mineral oil blurs your vision.

No, they can be used anytime. Vision is blurry just after application but clears up completely in just a few minutes or so.

As always, ask your doctor.  But I have cruised the single use vial aisle often and the list of ingredients, across all brands, is very short.

Try several variations and see what feels best to you.  They do seem to differ in feel.  Love them first thing in the morning, actually leave one out to grab.

Your tears have a similar structure to saliva. They’re mostly made of water, but also contain salt, fatty oils, and over different proteins.

Electrolytes in tears include:

  • sodium, which gives tears their characteristic salty taste
  • bicarbonate
  • chloride
  • potassium

Tears also contain lower levels of magnesium and calcium.

Together, these things make up three distinct layers in your tears:

  • The mucous layer keeps the tear attached to the eye.
  • The aqueous layer — the thickest layer — hydrates your eye, keeps bacteria away, and protects your cornea .
  • The oily layer prevents the other layers from evaporating and also keeps the tear’s surface smooth so that you can see through it.

Tears actually have 3 layers with the watery layer being the thickest. An artificial tear for a person with a deficient oily layer would not be benificial to a person who has a deficient aqueous(watery) layer.

My eye doc recommended Systane preservative free, too. It offered fair relief. But, I tried BioTrue (also preservative free) and it has given me better results than Systane, or several others I have tried. I like it and I have very dry eyes.

I have tried several over the last few years. The one, so far, that has worked the best for me is Systane Hydration PF...at the bottom of the box it says... Hydro Boost technology.
