My Mom needed one before she passed away.  My brother and I were tested, and there are a great many tests.  He was not a match but I was.  The surgeon however, would not proceed since I have a low blood pressure.  In the end it did not matter because during my Mom's on testing to get her body ready for a transplant they found a small bit of lung cancer.  They took that section off but she still passed away from lung cancer after living a life time with kidney disease.

I am not sure about any age limits BUT

A kidney saved my son in law's life. A person who passed away by accident gave my son in law life. not sure if his/her family gave his/her organs to be donated or if an organ donor card was signed but just that one selfless act of kindness can save lives. my son in law received his kidney early to mid July, he is gaining strength with each day of his new life.
