In my book, there are basics to be found in any practice, regardless of specialty. And within specialties, progress is made in technology, both in terms of technique and devices used toward specific ends. Docs DO have to spend time going to weekend certification courses to learn new techniques and become certified to use new devices.
Walk into your dentist's treatment room and take a good look around. If it looks as it might have 15-20 years ago, that's a cheap dentist who isn't investing in any capital equipment; or, he's mal-invested his money or has a meager patient base or a combo of both.
I had an eye-opening situation with my opthalmologist (new to me since I moved). Had to have cataract surgery in my right eye. After all of the post-op exams, they did yet another vision exam, after which I asked for a "prescription," so I could take it to Lenscrafters. Get this: That was when he told me he couldn't provide me with a script that could match that of the right lens in my current glasses. He left it at that, because I knew right off that their equipment was sooooooo old that it was impossible for him to determine what lens and corrections I needed. So, I went to Lenscrafters, had another eye exam and wah-lah. I'm all set.
So bottom line for me has always been to let my eyes do the walking. (This ophthalmologist performed a great cataract surgery, but this practice is NOT equiped to evaluate vision and write scrips for glasses, because their equipment is so old, like so much in Portland, OR. Just can't get over this!!!)
